Director, Inland Marine

Role Overview

The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic development and execution of organizational goals and objectives for Inland Marine. Provide leadership, direction and support to underwriting team(s) and/or direct reports. Manage underwriting functions to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio and expense targets while ensuring effective execution of best practices.

Responsibilities

• Delegate underwriting authority to staff via letters of authority; monitor and revise as appropriate.
• Ensure a quality underwriting work product is produced consistent with letters of authority, underwriting strategy, standards and process.
• Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review.
• Work with Operations to ensure all processing and service standards are met.
• Communicate agency production, training or quality issues to Marketing.
• Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claim, IT, etc.) to coordinate services to customers.
• Manage the day‑to‑day work activities of a group of underwriters and underwriting support staff.
• Collaborate with the Regional Product Lead to develop and execute on business and marketing strategies within an established geographic territory.
• Balance the team’s workloads and maintain appropriate staffing levels.
• Guide risk selection and pricing on daily transactional inland marine and property fire risks.
• Underwrite new and renewal business in a profitable manner according to authority level and established guidelines.
• Address career and training needs on an individual basis and communicate effectively with the team.
• Oversee the overall quality of the unit’s performance and conduct periodic audits.
• Review unusual risks and determine required additional research or consult with Manager or PLL on course of action.
• Achieve customer satisfaction and service standards for all retail brokers assigned to the team.
• Establish a culture of professionalism and team cohesion.
• Ensure the team meets or exceeds set production/premium goals and departmental guidelines.
• Identify strengths and weaknesses in current procedures and recommend changes.
• Provide training and coaching on marketing skills and broker management.
• Provide career planning and performance feedback to ensure proper staff development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 5‑10 years of inland marine and property underwriting experience.
• 5+ years of management experience.
• Demonstrated aptitude to manage people and projects.
• Proven ability to make sound underwriting decisions.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Ability to achieve business goals and objectives.
• Demonstrated sales, marketing and relationship management skill.

Compensation

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job‑relevant education, experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Director, Underwriting, Wholesale & Specialty is $162,800–$223,850 with a 55% incentive.
