District Security Specialist

Position Information Position Type: Security/ Security - 12-Months Date Posted: 6/24/2026 Location: District Administration Center - Glendale, AZ Date Available: 07/28/2026 Job Summary The District Security Specialist is responsible for ensuring that students, district personnel, and premises are safe and secure across all Peoria Unified School District campuses and facilities. This position maintains order, enforces district policies, responds to all incoming security calls according to established policies and procedures, and serves as a visible, professional, and approachable security presence supporting the district's commitment to a safe learning environment. The position requires strong communication and customer service skills. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patrol district premises and grounds to ensure safety and security standards are met, verifying that fields, buildings, gates, and performance spaces are properly secured and locked. Conduct scheduled safety assessments at school and district sites using established checklists, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) reviews, and perform follow-up inspections to confirm compliance with district policies. Ensure that required security and safety signage is properly displayed and legible. Direct unauthorized persons to leave school grounds when their presence is not permitted or is deemed unsafe. Respond to security calls and evaluate emergency and high-crisis situations to determine and provide the appropriate response, safeguarding students, staff, and property. Prepare clear, accurate, and timely documentation of incidents, observations, and security activities. Assist law enforcement and other public agencies in carrying out functions related to the school environment. Provide security and support for after-hours facility rentals: verify permits and rental contracts and assist third-party groups with the safe and proper use, opening, and closing of district fields, buildings, performance spaces, and technical equipment. Provide security and support at Governing Board meetings, executive sessions, study sessions, extracurricular activities, and other school- and district-sponsored events. Operate metal-detection equipment at school and district-sponsored events as directed. Maintain assigned district security equipment in proper working condition. Interact with students and parents to assist administrators in enforcing district regulations and applicable state laws, including attendance statutes. Assist bus drivers with bus security and student discipline issues; ride school buses as needed. Receive and respond to inquiries by phone or in person, providing accurate information or appropriate referral. Follow and support district safety policies and emergency operations procedures. Provide coverage for absent staff and perform other duties as assigned related to the general job function. Knowledge and Skills Basic understanding of general safety principles and security procedures Knowledge of customer service methods and professional communication techniques Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and city statutes, rules, policies, and procedures Knowledge of applicable PUSD and departmental policies and procedures Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, law enforcement, and the public Intermediate computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and position-related software, with the ability to prepare reports, maintain records, and communicate information accurately Minimum Qualifications A high school diploma or GED is required, along with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in a security, law enforcement, public safety, or closely related field. Experience in a school setting or with a public agency is preferred. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently during non-standard hours, exercise sound judgment in emergency or crisis situations, and interact professionally with a wide range of individuals including students, parents, staff, and law enforcement. Any equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved will be considered.
