Public Works Maintenance Worker

Position Accountabilities 1. Operates various types of equipment and performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, repair and construction of roads, storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, sidewalks, curbs, parking lots, traffic lights, equipment maintenance and related projects. 2. Drives trucks, tractors dump truck with snow plow and street sweepers. Operates power tamper, cement mixer, concrete saw, air compressor and hammer in addition to related equipment. 3. Install, maintains and repairs water mains, storm and sanitary sewers. Repairs cracks, transverse splits and blow outs. Replaces clamps, blots, fittings and valves. Restores property, soil, sod, asphalt and concrete. 4. Performs road maintenance and repair tasks, including mixing and pouring cement, constructing manholes and inlets, patching potholes and cracks, etc. Forms, pours and fixes sidewalks and curbs. 5. Performs activities necessary to paint, construct and install signs and traffic lights, troubleshoot and repair electrical faults in wiring. Installs, repairs, maintains and replaces photocells of timing clocks. 6. Installs and replaces water meters and remote units. Shuts off or turns on water service. Repairs and tests meters and B-boxes. Collects unpaid water bills or parking fees. Checks high water usage an billing. Reads meters and well readings. 7. Maintains sewage lift stations, grease s pumps, checks oil and clean tanks. 8. Performs various tasks including cutting, excavating, grading, digging, removing snow, cleaning streets and trimming trees. 9. Operates equipment safely, efficiently and effectively. Blocks off construction sites including constructing barricades, placing flashers and flagging traffic. Locates utility service lines before construction begins. 10. Performs routine maintenance and repair to equipment. 11. Performs a variety of physical labor tasks. 12. Prepares routine records on work performed and equipment used. 13. Promotes and maintains responsive community relations. 14. Maintains safe work areas and equipment, promptly reports work hazards, as necessary. Reports all work related injuries immediately, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs. 15. Performs related duties as assigned. Position Qualifications/Skills Graduation from high school or GED and considerable experience performing maintenance, construction or repair work. The Village may accept a combination of training and experience that provides equivalent knowledge abilities and skills. Considerable knowledge of the use of common hand tools, materials and standard equipment used in maintenance, repair and construction work. Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods and materials used in maintenance, repair and construction of public streets, buildings, water and sewer systems. Knowledge of the occupational safety precautions and hazards of the work. Possession of a valid Class B Illinois CDL driver's license preferred. Establish and maintain residence within a 10 mile radius of Park Forest. Ability to manage time wisely and stay organized. Critical Mental/Physical Requirements Ability to perform manual labor of extended periods in all weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to learn abroad range of operational skills. Ability to trouble shoot problems and seek solutions/corrective action. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to keep composure in adverse conditions such as weather or with other people. Ability to respond to emergency work – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ability to walk, lift, carry, climb. Skill in the use of hand and power tools and other equipment related to the work. Must successfully pass post-offer physical and isokinetic strength testing. Working Conditions The majority of work is performed outdoors with exposure to noise, dust, temperature, etc. Work may include driving, walking, lifting and climbing. In addition, severe weather extremes may be encountered. The job incumbent should exercise common sense and take necessary breaks, practice proper body alignment and alert a supervisor of any discomfort, as necessary. Must be able to work flexible hours in the event overtime is warranted. General starting salary for this position is $62,746 - $67,218 per year, depending on qualifications.
