Physician Assistant

Under the supervision of a licensed physician, the Physician Assistant provides comprehensive, patient-centered care across University of Maryland Medical System facilities. This role includes evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, developing treatment plans, and performing clinical procedures within the PA scope of practice. Depending on specialty and privileges obtained, the PA may assist in surgery and perform procedures such as suturing, injections, casting, and splinting.

For providers supporting the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) Community Paramedicine Program, care is delivered both in patients' homes and throughout the community.

Patient Care

• Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations.
• Evaluate, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions.
• Order and interpret laboratory studies, imaging, and other diagnostic tests.
• Develop treatment plans and prescribe medications in accordance with scope of practice.
• Document patient assessments, progress notes, and treatment plans accurately and timely.
• Respond to patient concerns and coordinate care with physicians and multidisciplinary teams.

Inpatient and Surgical Care

• Conduct daily rounds and monitor patient progress.
• Collaborate with attending physicians to address changes in patient condition.
• Provide pre- and post-operative care.
• Assist in surgery, including patient preparation, sterile technique, and post-operative transitions.
• Perform procedures such as suturing, wound care, casting, splinting, and medication administration.

Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) Program

• Perform comprehensive assessments in patients' homes and community settings.
• Provide on-scene medical care via SUV and/or ambulance response.
• Deliver patient-centered care outside the traditional hospital environment.
• Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to improve access to care and reduce unnecessary hospital utilization.

Education and Research

• Participate in quality improvement and research initiatives.
• Assist with data collection and reporting for prospective studies.
• Provide education and mentorship to physician assistant students and healthcare personnel.
• Support in-service training programs for clinical staff.

Education & Licensure

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Current Maryland Physician Assistant licensure required.
• NCCPA certification or eligibility required.
• Current BLS certification required.
• ACLS certification required.
