REPORTS TO: Assistant Principal
WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week
DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS
Provides academic instruction and classroom management support to students enrolled in the Montgomery County Juvenile Court School (MCJC School) serving youth placed in the Center for Adolescent Services (CAS), Nicholas Residential Treatment Center (NRTC), and Detention facilities. The Long-Term Substitute Teacher assumes instructional responsibilities during extended teacher absences and may provide instruction across a wide range of grades and educational levels from upper elementary through high school.
Instruction may be delivered in one or more of the following core academic subject areas:
• English Language Arts
• Mathematics
• Science
• Social Studies
The Long-Term Substitute Teacher utilizes the Bright Thinker curriculum platform, Ohio Department of Education standards, and supplemental instructional materials to provide differentiated instruction, support academic growth, facilitate credit attainment, and assist students in meeting graduation and educational transition goals. Instruction is delivered within a secure educational setting and is designed to address the diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs of justice-involved youth.
The Long-Term Substitute Teacher collaborates with administrators, counselors, transition coordinators, special education personnel, probation staff, and treatment teams to support student achievement, engagement, and successful educational outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Utilize the Bright Thinker curriculum platform as the primary instructional program for students assigned to MCJC School classrooms.
• Monitor student progress within Bright Thinker and provide instructional support and interventions to promote academic success and course completion.
• Assign, evaluate, and document student coursework through Bright Thinker and other approved educational systems.
• Integrate teacher-led instruction, enrichment activities, and supplemental educational materials with Bright Thinker coursework.
• Maintain accurate attendance, grades, progress reports, and behavioral documentation.
• Collaborate with educational staff, counselors, transition coordinators, and treatment teams regarding student progress and educational needs.
• Provide instruction and support to students with varying academic abilities, behavioral challenges, and special education needs.
• Support graduation pathways and educational transition planning.
• Establish and maintain a structured, safe, and positive classroom environment consistent with facility and school expectations.
• Implement PBIS strategies, behavior intervention plans, and classroom management practices designed to support student success.
• Participate in staff meetings, professional development activities, multidisciplinary team meetings, and educational planning sessions as assigned.

SCOPE OF SUPERVISION
Provides continuous supervision of youth during scheduled classroom instruction, transitions, and educational activities to ensure student safety, maintain security, promote appropriate behavior, and support a positive learning environment consistent with Court, facility, and school expectations.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED
Vehicles; computers; copier, fax machine, telephone, calculator, and other general office equipment.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS
Students; parents/guardians; Director of Education/Principal ; Assistant principals; Youth Specialist Probation Officers, Probation Managers/Supervisors ; School Counselors, Transition Coordinators; special education personnel; school districts of residence; clinical support staff; and external agency representatives.
CONFIDENTIAL DATA
Detained youth files; medical records; behavioral logs and documentation; non-public record information contained in personnel files, psychological testing reports, special education records, youth transcripts, youth report cards, youth educational evaluations, youth behavior intervention plans.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Secure correctional facility with some exposure to unruly and at times out of control resident populations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: Juvenile Court process, policy and procedure; basic office procedures, methods and computer equipment; Supervisory principles; Counseling; Safety practices; Departmental Youth Services and American Correctional Standards governing residential treatment centers; accreditation processes and management principles; disability law including IDEIA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Ability to: demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied anility levels who are exponentially at risk of school failure, including those exhibiting specialized needs; apply management principles to practical work situations; maintain composure under stressful situations while performing effectively and assertively with tact, diplomacy, and sound professional judgment; maintain good public relations as Court representative; establish and maintain effective work relationships with associates and job contacts; maintain confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information; exhibit good organizational, communication, interpersonal and time management skills; collaborate with a variety of community, school, and Court stakeholders while maintaining positive working relationships with those who you may regularly interact during the course of the school day.
Skill in: oral and written communication; operation of a computer; application of department software programs; subject control and security procedures relevant to working in a secure corrections environment; program planning and administration; and making management decisions; producing routine written program reports and correspondence.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess or be eligible to obtain one of the following through the Ohio Department of Education:
• Long-Term Substitute Teaching License
• Multi-Age Substitute License
• Educator License
• Alternative Resident Educator License
Previous teaching experience is preferred. Experience working with at-risk youth, students with disabilities, alternative education populations, juvenile justice programs, or behavioral intervention programs is strongly preferred.
Ability to work effectively within a secure correctional treatment environment while maintaining positive relationships with students, educational staff, treatment teams, and facility personnel.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Ability to acquire a State of Ohio 5-Year Multi-Age Substitute License, 1-Year Substitute Teaching License, Long-Term Substitute Teaching License, Educator Unlimited Substitute Teaching License OR willingness to obtain one of the above-mentioned licenses
Ability to acquire First Aid/CPR
Valid State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
