Artistic Development Associate / Sloan Project Administrator Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning not-for-profit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musical, seeks a motivated Artistic Development Associate to become part of our Artistic Development team. Manhattan Theatre Club is one of New York’s preeminent not-for-profit cultural institutions and a premier destination for both the most talented artists and discerning audiences to return to time and again. We produce seasons of bold, entertaining and thought-provoking new plays and musical at our Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway and on our two off‑Broadway stages at New York City Center. For over 50 years, MTC has been acclaimed for identifying, fostering and supporting extraordinary artists at all stages of their careers and for the consistent quality, range and originality of our over 600 premieres, which include nearly 20% of all of the new plays on Broadway since we opened the Friedman in 2003. Much of this work has gone on to be mounted around the country and the world, appearing frequently on annual “most‑produced” lists and amounting to a significant contribution to the American theatrical canon. MTC productions have earned 7 Pulitzer Prizes, 31 Tony Awards, 54 Drama Desk Awards, and 49 Obie Awards, amongst many other honors. Basic Job Function This position will report to the Associate Artistic Director (AAD) and will be actively involved in reading and evaluating scripts for programming consideration; identifying and cultivating relationships with new artists; supporting the development of new work through the Artistic Development office’s robust array of commissioning programs, developmental workshops, artistic initiatives, and more; participating in season planning; tracking readings and productions happening locally, nationally and internationally; and maintaining the in‑and‑out flow of scripts through the office. Duties and Responsibilities The Associate will be responsible for identifying and developing relationships with emerging and established artists whose work merits consideration for future development, commission, production, and other programming at MTC and will actively contribute to programming conversations. The Associate will read and evaluate 3‑5 scripts per week, and attend productions and readings in NYC and sometimes nationally, to scout and identify talent and support artists in MTC’s orbit. The Associate will track readings and productions happening at peer theatres in NYC, nationally, and internationally, and help in the process of soliciting material and responding to invitations that come through the office. The Associate will be the primary point person in terms of scheduling and overseeing all MTC readings and workshops planned throughout the year, and will maintain the office’s readings budget. The Associate will also help support the producing of the Ted Snowdon Reading Series each spring and offer dramaturgical support to the plays as needed. As the Sloan Project Administrator, the Associate will play a large role in administering the Sloan commissioning program and will actively solicit Sloan proposals from writers of interest, draft language for Sloan grants and reports, coordinate the annual Sloan Advisory panel meeting, connect artists with scientific advisors as needed, and work closely with Sloan commissioned‑artists to develop their plays. The Associate will collaborate with the Development and Marketing departments to provide language for grants, award nominations, press releases, Playbills, and more when applicable. The Associate will assign the Literary Trainee certain tasks and oversee the execution of some of their duties. The Associate’s other administrative tasks will include, but not be limited to: managing written and phone correspondence for the office, departmental schedules, and expenses, as well as overseeing and maintaining MTC’s script database and tracking calendars on AirTable. Desired Experience and Qualifications The ideal candidate should possess the following: At minimum three years of literary or relevant experience. A strong understanding of MTC’s artistic point of view, particularly as represented in recent programming, and a knowledge of the new play and musical landscape, and the artistic process of developing and producing new work for the stage. A sharp eye for identifying emerging talent and a finger on the pulse of contemporary playwriting and how the work exists in relationship with MTC and its programming and artistic mission. A proactive mindset that appreciates that tasks will range from big picture to daily operations and that all tasks are important to the function of the office. A proclivity for organization and precision, a strong sense of responsibility, and a knack for independent problem‑solving. An understanding of how to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines within the context of MTC's workflow. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. An agility within a rapidly‑changing field and comfort with pivoting quickly as organizational needs shift. An ability to think independently while also collaborating meaningfully with administrative colleagues and artists. Comprehensive knowledge of MSWord, Excel and Outlook and an ability to navigate Google Suite and AirTable is preferred.
