Annual Salary $87,257 - $120,832 (range applies to Airport Police Officer I & II). The current starting salary is subject to change. Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer. Duties An Airport Police Officer is a sworn peace officer authorized to carry a firearm. Responsibilities include enforcing federal, state, and City of Los Angeles ordinances, as well as airport security, traffic, and safety rules. Duties encompass uniformed foot, vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle patrol, plainclothes assignments, arrest, and report writing at Los Angeles World Airports. Officers provide public information regarding airport operations and perform related work. Personnel Requirements At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by graduation from the police academy. Graduation from a U.S. high school, GED, or equivalent, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate. A two- or four-year college degree may substitute for the high school requirement. Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment. A driving record with three or more moving violations, serious accidents, or a major moving violation within the last 36 months will result in disqualification. Must meet or be able to meet all standards set by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST). Compliance with City drug and alcohol policies; a drug and alcohol screening test is required prior to and during employment. Physical Abilities Test (PAT) Prospective officers must complete a qualifying PAT that includes sit‑ups, a 300‑meter sprint, push‑ups, and a 1.5‑mile run under stressful conditions. Performance determines a pass/fail status, with a valid score lasting 12 months. Background Investigation An investigation includes completion of a Personal History Statement, fingerprinting, and a background interview. Checks cover employment, police, financial, education, and military records. Findings are valid for 12 months. A polygraph may be conducted and may be revised in accordance with current guidelines. Medical Evaluation Evaluation by a city physician includes a cardiac stress test if required. Applicants must be in excellent health and capable of completing academy training and job duties. The medical examination results are valid for up to 12 months. A psychological evaluation by a city psychologist is also required; written tests are valid for up to 24 months and the oral interview for 12 months. Vision Requirements Uncorrected distance vision must not exceed 20/70 in either eye, and corrected vision must be 20/30 in each eye. If soft contact lenses are worn, they must have been used for at least one month. Certification and Appointment Successful completion of all examinations, the PAT, the interview, and the required medical and psychological evaluations is necessary before appointment. Training is a six‑month program at 40 hours per week, with full pay. Probation lasts 18 months, during which employees must complete a comprehensive training program including a basic police recruit school approved by CA POST.
