Housing Specialist, The Landing Family Shelter

Position: Housing Specialist Reports To: Director of Social Services Location: 94-00 Ditmars Blvd, Queens, NY 11369 What The Housing Specialist Does: Establish and maintain professional relationships with clients, ensuring confidentiality to engage them in case management services. Develop curriculum addressing shelter residents’ housing, independent living skills, and entitlement needs, including the permanent housing search process and options. Develop and facilitate a series of monthly housing readiness workshops. Maintain a bulletin board providing relevant housing information. Provide individualized and group counseling on housing and entitlement topics. Select appropriate instructional methods such as individual training, group instruction, self‑study, lectures, demonstrations, simulation exercises, role play, and computer‑based training. Conduct marketing and outreach presentations to recruit clients and resources. Collaborate with case managers to help clients overcome barriers to goal attainment and advocate for themselves toward self‑sufficiency. Monitor clients’ progress toward goals through scheduled phone contact and/or face‑to‑face visits, documenting via progress notes. Create and maintain client files and duplicate all client documents. Assist case managers in scheduling appointments with referral organizations. Assist case managers in escorting clients to appointments (apartment viewings, public benefits, educational, medical, social service, etc.). Assist clients in completing applications for benefits and entitlements, and may process applications on clients’ behalf. Minimum Education/Experience Required: High school diploma or G.E.D. plus two years of applicable experience or equivalent. Other Requirements: Obtain State Central Registry clearance, Register of Substantiated Category One Cases of Abuse or Neglect (SEL) clearance, and criminal history information checks via fingerprinting with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services before employment begins. Maintain required clearances throughout employment. Obtain annual PPD test. Bi‑lingual preferred.
