Construction Manager - Substation - Texas Job Details | Black & Veatch Family of Companies

Job Summary Responsible for coordination of the construction on the substation project. Coordinates compliance with schedule, safety, cost, and quality decisions in conjunction with the Project Field Manager. This is a field assignment and requires travel. Key Responsibilities Provide the site construction teams with the means, methods, and staffing to support construction of the substation. Work with the EH&S group to develop and maintain safety programs associated with construction activities. Develop craft training and certification programs for lineman and groundman trades for open‑shop craft employees. Maintain construction procedures and quality programs associated with the construction of substation work. Identify and support the recruitment of craft and leadership associated with the project work. Support project proposals, including development of staffing, equipment, and other direct and indirect quantities and costs to support estimate development. Lead and participate in design constructability reviews. Support subcontract development for projects as needed. Participate actively in project risk reviews, identifying and developing mitigation plans associated with construction. Assist the site team in resolving problems and report on issues related to drawings, schedule, quality, quantity tracking, cost reporting, and safety. Monitor construction productivity, progress, and cost for all disciplines; report to Operations Manager, Construction Manager, and Project Controls Manager, and take necessary actions to maintain targets. Develop corrective plans to ensure progress and productivity targets are met. Verify that all equipment, material, manpower, and resources needed to support the project schedule are available and on site. Review all timesheets, installed quantity reports, and progress payment requests. Develop a stable working relationship with the client and assigned subcontractor(s). Develop and distribute job hazard analyses for major erection packages within scope. Identify potential back charges and out‑of‑scope issues and report to the Construction Manager. Support the commercial recovery process. Provide supervision, training, development, and performance management to direct reports. Adhere to safety and quality standards as applicable to duties and accountabilities. Support continuous improvement efforts and change management associated with the implementation of improvements. Preferred Qualifications Direct‑hire substation construction experience preferred. Experience with outage plans within construction. Bachelor’s degree in construction or engineering and craft experience preferred. 3+ years of experience as a Construction Manager level or above. 8+ years with a degree or 14+ years without a degree of substation experience. Knowledge of project budget process and tools. Knowledge of department budget process and tools. Knowledge of project controls. Risk assessment and management skills. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in construction, engineering, or related field preferred, or relevant field experience. 10+ years of construction supervisory experience required. OSHA Training. Must complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor‑vehicle records search) as applicable. Certifications OSHA Training. Work Environment and Physical Demands Physical demands: lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds; stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move, and walk long distances in and around confined, cluttered places and uneven areas; use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to a set procedure; repetitive movement; work above 5 feet in height; climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffold; work up to a 12‑hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions. Work environment: typical construction site environment; cramped work spaces and awkward positions; very hot above 90 °F or very cold below 32 °F temperatures and exposure to inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain; extremely bright or low lighting conditions; exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable; work around hazardous equipment; typical office environment; safety‑sensitive position.
