Chief Advancement Officer

Greater Mental Health of New York is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and visionary leader to serve as its next Chief Advancement Officer (CAO). This executive leadership role is an opportunity to help shape the future of a highly respected behavioral health organization with an 80-year legacy of serving communities across the region.

As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Chief Advancement Officer will lead and integrate the organization's fundraising, communications, marketing, corporate engagement, and community engagement strategies to strengthen visibility, deepen relationships, diversify revenue streams, and support long-term organizational growth and sustainability.

The CAO will serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO, executive team, and Board of Directors while helping to elevate Greater Mental Health's public voice, expand partnerships, and strengthen community presence during an important period of organizational growth and evolution. This role requires a collaborative and forward-thinking leader who understands the intersection of fundraising, communications, relationship management, and community engagement, and who can effectively represent the organization across philanthropic, corporate, civic, and community audiences.

Organizational Leadership & Strategy

• Develop and implement the organization's overall Advancement and External Relations strategy in alignment with agency priorities and long-term growth goals
• Serve as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the CEO and Executive Leadership Team
• Help strengthen and elevate the organization's public visibility, community presence, and external partnerships
• Identify opportunities to diversify and strengthen revenue streams and external engagement strategies
• Monitor industry trends and emerging opportunities to support organizational growth and sustainability
• Attend internal leadership meetings and represent the organization at external meetings, events, and community engagements as required

Fundraising & Revenue Growth

• Lead fundraising initiatives and secure financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations, government partners, and community stakeholders
• Build and manage a portfolio of major donors, foundations, and corporate partners
• Establish and achieve short- and long-term fundraising goals
• Strengthen donor cultivation, stewardship, and moves management systems and practices
• Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns, donor engagement opportunities, and events
• Partner with leadership and board members to strengthen fundraising engagement and external relationship-building efforts

Communications, Marketing & Thought Leadership

• Oversee the communications and marketing functions and develop strategies that strengthen organizational visibility, storytelling, and public engagement
• Help shape and advance the organization's narrative, messaging, and thought leadership initiatives
• Support efforts that elevate awareness of the organization's programs, services, impact, and community leadership
• Collaborate across departments to ensure alignment between communications, advancement, and organizational priorities

Corporate & Community Engagement

• Develop strategies to strengthen corporate partnerships, sponsorships, and community-based collaborations
• Support the growth of community engagement initiatives, public conversations, trainings, and partnership opportunities that expand the organization's reach and visibility
• Identify opportunities to deepen engagement with business leaders, elected officials, civic leaders, and community stakeholders

Board & External Relations

• Serve as executive liaison to the Advancement and External Relations Committee of the Board of Directors
• Prepare and present reports to executive leadership and the Board on Advancement activities, fundraising progress, and strategic opportunities
• Partner with Board members to strengthen engagement, cultivation, and external relationship development

Advancement Operations & Team Leadership

• Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to Advancement and External Relations team members
• Evaluate and optimize Advancement and External Relations operations by establishing KPIs, defining metrics, and implementing systems that support effectiveness and accountability
• Provide executive oversight of the donor management system
• Develop and manage the Advancement and External Relations budget, maximizing resources and supporting financial sustainability

• Strategic and visionary leader with the ability to identify opportunities for growth and organizational advancement
• Proven success in fundraising, donor cultivation, relationship management, and revenue generation
• Strong understanding of the intersection of fundraising, communications, marketing, and community engagement
• Exceptional communication, storytelling, and relationship-building skills
• Executive presence with the ability to serve as an ambassador for the organization across diverse audiences
• Strong leadership, management, and team development skills
• Strong organizational and project management skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively across departments, leadership teams, boards, and external stakeholders
• Proficiency in donor management software and advancement systems
• Strong understanding of the nonprofit sector and its unique opportunities and challenges

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related field required; Master's degree preferred
• Minimum of 5–10 years of senior leadership experience in advancement, development, fundraising, communications, or related fields
• Must meet all regulatory requirements required by Greater Mental Health of New York
• Strong computer knowledge: typing, communication tools, scheduling tools, and web browsers
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and database management systems.
• Proficiency in English includes skills in reading, writing, and speaking.
• Must be cleared and maintain clearance by applicable regulatory clearances as required
• Legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship

Special Considerations :

• Position may require extended periods of sitting and computer-based work
• Work hours, reporting structure, and on-site location are subject to change based on program needs

Mandated Reporter:

This is a Mandated Reporter position. The NYS Justice Center legislation defines anyone who has regular and substantial contact with any person with special needs as a "custodian" under the law and, therefore, a mandated reporter. You can be held liable by both the civil and criminal legal systems for intentionally failing to make a report.
