Director of Accounting

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Director of Accounting to join a publicly traded real estate firm. This role will lead the accounting and financial reporting activities and ensure the integrity of the company's SEC reporting and internal controls. The Director of Accounting will play a key leadership role in the monthly close process, technical accounting, financial reporting, and operational improvements. This individual will partner closely with Asset Management, Treasury, Capital Markets, FP&A, Legal, and external auditors to support the firm's continued growth while building scalable accounting processes and maintaining a best-in-class control environment. Key Responsibilities Prepare internal and external reporting packages for month-end and quarter-end, including support for earnings releases and SEC filings (10-Q and 10-K). Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring the timely preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting. Review general ledger and subledger activity to ensure the completeness, accuracy, and integrity of financial data. Prepare and review monthly management reporting packages and quarterly financial reporting schedules. Oversee monthly and quarterly valuation activities, including the review of fair value analyses and pricing for mortgage-related assets. Manage the accounting for real estate owned (REO) assets, including rental income recognition, operating expenses, and related accounting schedules. Review funding requests, construction draws, and capital activity in partnership with the Asset Management team. Prepare technical accounting memoranda for complex transactions, securitizations, financing arrangements, interest income recognition, and consolidation analyses. Analyze portfolio performance metrics, average balances, interest income, and other key financial data to support internal and external reporting. Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and regulatory requirements. Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve reporting processes, and implement automation initiatives that enhance efficiency and scalability. Lead or participate in strategic projects, accounting system implementations, and cross-functional initiatives that support the company's long-term objectives. Oversee accounts payable processes, expense accruals, and related accounting controls. Serve as the primary accounting contact for internal and external audits, coordinating audit requests and ensuring timely resolution of inquiries. Mentor and develop accounting staff by providing coaching, technical guidance, and opportunities for professional growth. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA required. 7–15 years of progressive accounting experience, with current or past public accounting experience.
