Non-Profit Accounting Manager (Contract)

Role: Accounting Manager — Nonprofit (Contract)

Our client is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to join a mission-driven nonprofit organization and play a key role in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, and grants-related accounting. This position is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys working closely with finance leadership and program teams and has experience navigating the unique accounting requirements of a nonprofit environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
• Oversee grant accounting and financial management, including tracking restricted and unrestricted funding, reviewing grant-related transactions, monitoring budgets, and ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
• Partner with program and grants teams to ensure accurate financial reporting and proper allocation of expenses across grants and programs.
• Support the preparation of IRS Form 990 and related nonprofit tax filings, including gathering schedules, reviewing financial information, and coordinating with external tax advisors.
• Assist with annual audits, including preparation of schedules, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor requests.
• Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, and budget-to-actual analyses for senior leadership.
• Maintain strong internal controls and ensure accounting policies and procedures are consistently followed.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and other financial planning activities.
• Work closely with Finance, Development, Programs, and Operations to improve financial processes and reporting.
• Leverage Workday Financials to manage accounting transactions, reporting, reconciliations, and financial data; identify opportunities to improve system utilization and process efficiency.
• Assist with process improvements, system enhancements, and other finance transformation initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit, association, NGO, or mission-driven organization.
• Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, and grant accounting.
• Direct experience supporting or preparing Form 990 filings.
• Experience managing or overseeing federal, foundation, government, or restricted grants.
• Hands-on experience with Workday Financials is strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
• Experience with month-end/year-end close, reconciliations, audit preparation, and internal controls.
• Strong Excel skills and the ability to analyze financial data and identify discrepancies.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with finance and non-finance stakeholders.
