GW's Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) is searching for a full-time Post-Doctoral Associate for Dr. Maggirwar's laboratory. Dr. Maggirwar's laboratory focuses on the vascular complications associated with HIV-1 infection. Our goal is to use the immune cells isolated from the blood samples derived from patients to study the role of platelets and ART in modulating immune response in HIV-1 pathogenesis dissemination in context to cardiovascular disorders and cerebral small vessel diseases. Additional mechanistic analyses will be done by using humanized mice infected with infectious HIV-1. The postdoctoral associate will work to investigate the clonal hematopoiesis phenomenon in monocytes derived from HIV-infected and control subjects and determine the function of this cellular subtype in context to HIV-associated co-morbidities and neuroinflammation. This study will involve epigenetic modification carried out largely through 'omics approaches. The postdoctoral associate will participate in the planning of the experiments, will analyze and interpret the data, will publish results, and will present the findings at conferences. This individual will assist in all aspects of research while receiving advanced training from the Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence. This position may also help to lead and direct the work of lower-level research staff. MITM conducts innovative, fundamental, basic, and translational research for HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. Postdocs will design, organize, and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings, and publish results in research journals under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for general scientific operations in the lab, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees, and other researchers.

Responsibilities include:

• Guiding research projects through conducting experimental work.
• Maintaining detailed documentation of experimental work.
• Presenting data within and outside of the laboratory group at meetings and symposia.
• Maintaining close communications with PI and collaborators regarding progress.
• Writing, editing, and submitting manuscripts/abstracts detailing the results of the project
• Performing other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

A Postdoctoral Associate:

• holds a PhD or equivalent degree;
• develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
• receives financial support in the form of a salary that is typically funded by grants, contracts or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor; and
• has a limited term of up to five years at GW.

In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.

Minimum Qualifications


Applicants must have fulfilled all requirements for the award of a PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant field by the date of employment.

Desired Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Immunology, Virology, Systems Biology or related fields.
• Preference will be given to persons with demonstrated experience in genomics/proteomics studies of clinical isolates of immune cells and validating the outcomes in using in vitro/in vivo models of disease by performing wet-bench assays. In this context, prior training and experience in handling rodents and conducting in vivo experiments, as well as expertise in flowcytometry and advanced microscopy imaging, is desired.
