Police Officer

The purpose of this position is to perform general law enforcement duties in order to preserve public peace, protect lives, property, and rights of the public by enforcing statutory law and municipal ordinances, deterring crime and responding to calls for assistance. Employees in this classification perform skilled, protective, and investigative work. Responsibilities Enforce all City, State, and federal codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations; apprehend and/or arrest persons who violate these laws; perform arrests in accordance with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics. Maintain visibility by patrolling assigned area, City streets, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses; initiate contacts with business operators and residents; help develop trends and patterns pertaining to specific locations. Monitor radio communications and respond to emergency calls or calls for assistance; communicate with the dispatcher; assess situations; take appropriate actions to bring the situation to resolution; follow department policies and procedures; provide backup assistance to fellow officers as necessary. Secure crime scenes until relieved by a supervisor; gather preliminary information in investigations by obtaining statements from victims, witnesses and suspects; perform and document searches of people, vehicles and buildings; prepare investigative reports of findings; detect and collect evidence that provides probable cause; testify in court. Complete and review paperwork documenting shift and incident activities; submit state reports of criminal offenses; prepare a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, and correspondence; maintain administrative records and files. Engage in public relations and community service activities to promote a positive image of the department; respond to questions, complaints, and requests for information from the public, merchants, civic organizations, and internal stakeholders. Maintain the peace and safety of the community by quelling public disturbances. Provide safe and convenient flow of traffic and pedestrians; investigate traffic accidents; enforce traffic violations; conduct DUI investigations; direct traffic and traffic control devices around accidents or congested areas; administer field sobriety tests; identify wanted persons or vehicles; impound vehicles; assist disabled motorists; perform other traffic duties as directed. Conduct initial investigations into crimes such as robbery, burglary, or assault; conduct follow‑up investigations; conduct surveillance of areas for suspected criminal activity. Respond to civil matters such as landlord/tenant disputes. Testify in civil and criminal court proceedings and give depositions. Perform routine office functions such as filing, faxing, answering phones, and copying. Perform related duties as directed. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational/Technical training in law‑enforcement or a closely related field. State of Florida Law‑Enforcement Officer Certification. Valid State of Florida Driver License. Must be 19 years old.
