Job Summary This position is general law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property, exercising orders issued through the authority of the City of Doral Police Department. An employee in this classification will perform varied assignments in motorized patrol, traffic control and enforcement, accident investigation, preliminary and follow‑up investigation at crime scenes, serving writs in criminal proceedings, and assisting in public safety education programs. The work involves personal danger and high levels of physical, emotional, and mental stress. Essential Functions Patrols the City of Doral area in a radio‑equipped car or motorcycle to preserve law and order. Responds to a variety of calls requiring approaches ranging from counseling to use of physical or deadly force. Responds to crashes, domestic disturbances, misdemeanors and felonies, traffic and crowd problems. Administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, locates evidence, obtains witness information, completes reports, makes arrests, and escorts prisoners to jail. Testifies in court regarding work activities. Serves criminal and metropolitan writs; conducts searches and surveillance to locate persons to be served; arrests fugitives. Serves as an instructor teaching traffic safety to civic and school groups; broadcasts traffic information via commercial radio stations. Assists in program and agency cooperation dealing with domestic crises, alcoholism, suicide attempts and other emotional disturbances. Participates in underwater search and recovery missions, mobile crime laboratory investigations, undercover surveillance, civil defense exercises, rescue operations, marine patrol, and vice raids. Directs traffic at local schools as needed. Performs roll call, assigns duties, and completes paperwork. Assists in departmental training program presentations. Works variable hours and shift schedules as needed. Additional Duties Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Education and Training For Certified Police Officers : Employed in a full‑time sworn classification by (or separated within the preceding 24 months from) another police agency; Possession of a Basic Recruit Certificate of Compliance from the State of Florida or equivalent; Completed probation with a Florida law enforcement agency and one year of police experience. For those currently enrolled in Florida Basic Recruit Training (Police Academy) : Must meet the minimum requirements of a Police Officer prior to receiving a start date, including passing the Basic Abilities Test, completing the Florida Basic Recruit Training Program, and achieving a passing score on the State Officer Certification Exam. Physical Abilities Test (PAA) – All applicants must pass the test. The test consists of: A timed mile run Push‑ups (1 minute) Sit‑ups (1 minute) A timed 300‑meter run Composite score based on time period established for minimum age requirements. High School Diploma or GED. Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record at the time of application and before the final offer. Minimum age of 19. U.S. citizen. No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving perjury or false statements (post‑July 1, 1981). No dishonorable discharge from any U.S. Armed Forces. Good moral character. Must present at application time: Minimum County medical standards. Visual acuity not exceeding 20/100 uncorrected, 20/30 corrected; contact lenses permitted. Color discrimination of red, green, and yellow. Weight proportionate to height. Minimum Qualifications and Standards Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities State statutes, local ordinances, and departmental regulations concerning search, seizure, arrest, and evidence admissibility. City of Doral geography and road network. Law enforcement methods and procedures. First aid principles and skill in their application. Basic human relations techniques. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Skill in firearm use and care. Independent work with minimal supervision. Firm, impartial law enforcement respecting individual rights. Accurate report writing. Prompt and appropriate emergency or criminal response. Effective and equitable interaction with all people under various circumstances. Adaptability to changing social conditions. Responsive to training program development. Proficiency in office equipment (copy machines, multi‑line telephone systems). Computer data entry and use of technical applications such as GIS or CAD. Repair of small or light equipment such as power tools. Physical strength and agility meeting physical requirements. Emotional stability and capacity to handle inter‑personal situations. Personal character capable of withstanding frequent ethical and legal challenges. Physical Requirements Balance on narrow, slippery, or moving surfaces; climb, crawl, crouch, grasp, kneel, lift, pull, push, reach, and perform repetitive hand motions. Maintain verbal communication and rational decision making. Stand for sustained periods, stoop, and walk between work sites. Use visual acuity for computer terminal viewing. Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds to move objects. Work Schedule Non‑exempt, full‑time position with a 40‑hour work week.
