Job Summary Provide person-centered ministry of spiritual care, support, and sacraments to patients, families, physicians, and hospital personnel at a full-time, 40‑hour per week position with 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shifts, Monday through Friday, and required on‑call coverage. Responsibilities Provide spiritual care services, consultation, and support to patients, families, physicians, and hospital personnel as assigned and in accordance with department policies. Facilitate sacramental ministries such as Holy Communion, Baptism, Confession and Absolution, the Sacrament of the Sick, and related rites. Respond to Codes Yellow and Blue, deaths, and other emergencies or crises. Offer spiritual care and support to hospital personnel dealing with patient deaths or critical incidents related to patients, families, or staff. Assist families with health‑care needs so they can provide supportive care, help them understand procedures surrounding death, and contact family or significant persons. Promote patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating in safety initiatives, and assist patients and families in communicating wishes of care through Advance Directives. Identify complex medical‑ethical issues and refer to Senior Staff Chaplain or Medical Ethicist for assistance. Respond to requests and referrals for information and assistance with health‑care Advance Directives, including Power of Attorney for Health Care; assist patients and families in completing and documenting Advance Directives in the medical record. Collaborate with Senior Staff Chaplains in patient advance care planning, family goals‑of‑care meetings, interdisciplinary team activities and development, staff and patient‑directed support groups. Participate in overall site coverage; work shifts as needed to provide 24‑hour coverage, including weekends and holidays. Conduct chapel services and memorial services as scheduled. Serve on department, site, or system committees as needed; submit required reports by the designated dates. Interpret and support the Advocate Mission, Values, and Philosophy in primary areas of assignment; assist managers in developing goals and objectives to enhance implementation. Support the hospital ministry of community clergy with referrals, information, education, counseling, and consultation; participate in community clergy associations and serve as guest speaker at area houses of worship when possible. Act as a resource to clergy, houses of worship, and community groups to enhance hospital community liaisons; maintain good standing and ecclesiastical endorsement through active participation in the life and work of the faith community. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from an accredited college or university. Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent master’s degree program; if using an equivalent degree, a letter from a recognized certifying agency (APC, NACC, ACPE, or NAJC) confirming that theological education standards for certification have been met. Four successfully completed units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). Ecclesiastical endorsement from the candidate’s faith community. Member in good standing with their sponsoring faith community. 1–3 years of clinical chaplaincy experience. Board certification obtained within 18 months of hire; candidate for certification in the Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or National Association of Jewish Chaplains. Preferred Qualifications Strong pastoral care and spiritual assessment skills. Experience working in a healthcare setting. Ability to provide emotional and spiritual support to patients, families, and care teams. Experience with pediatric chaplaincy in a hospital setting. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Good communication and therapeutic communication skills. Time‑management and ability to manage group processes. Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated problem‑solving abilities and leadership in group settings. Proficiency with word processing and basic computer programs. Effective communication in English related to performance of essential job activities. Physical Requirements Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate 24‑hour on‑call coverage, including evening and night shifts, chosen weekend and holiday shifts. May be exposed to hazardous materials and life‑threatening diseases; may interact with aggressive or agitated patients; must use techniques to manage such patients and may be involved in restraining them. Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment. Lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; use patient handling equipment for lifts over 35 pounds, or when the patient cannot assist, with at least one other associate when available.
