Core Skills of a Strong Lead Veterinary Technician 1) Advanced Clinical & Technical Skills They must be the clinical authority for the tech team. Key abilities Advanced anesthesia monitoring & troubleshooting Surgical nursing & aseptic technique oversight Dental radiography and COHAT workflow leadership Venipuncture, catheter placement, and lab proficiency Fear Free / low-stress handling expertise Strong pharmacology knowledge & dose calculations What this looks like in real life Can jump into any room or surgery and improve efficiency instantly Coaches techs in real time without taking over Recognizes subtle patient changes before they become emergencies 2) Workflow & Efficiency Leadership This is where lead techs dramatically impact productivity scores and doctor output. Key abilities Understands hospital flow from check-in → discharge Assigns techs strategically based on doctor style and caseload Anticipates bottlenecks before they happen Keeps surgeries and appointments running on time Builds and enforces protocols/SOPs Daily behaviors Adjusts staffing mid-day when schedule changes Keeps doctors moving forward (huge for production!) 3) Coaching & Training Skills A lead tech is not just the best tech — they build better techs.
