Job Description The Welder is responsible for performing all aspects of welding on inland marine vessels and equipment, including maintenance, fabrication, and structural repairs. The role ensures the structural integrity and operational readiness of barges and boats while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and compliance. By executing high‑quality repairs and fabrications, the Welder supports vessel reliability, minimizes downtime, and contributes directly to the safety, efficiency, and longevity of marine operations. Major Responsibilities Perform all aspects of welding work, including preparing and checking equipment. Weld steel barges and ships. Perform stick welding – 6010, 7018, and 7024. Conduct flux‑core welding in all positions using 0.52 wire. Safely operate heavy equipment and follow all safety policies and procedures. Maintain compliance with all regulatory bodies and safety rules and policies applicable to the work. Travel to multiple locations as necessary. Perform other duties as required and directed by management. Carry out the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, Mission, and Vision of Illinois Marine Towing and Canal Barge Company. Safety Orientation: Proactively follow all safety procedures and help foster a culture of safety in all work environments. Reporting: The Welder reports to the Shipyard Services Manager. Experience and Education High School Diploma or equivalent required. Valid driver’s license. Minimum two years of experience in stick welding. ABS certification preferred but not required. Strong understanding and application of workplace safety practices. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Physical Requirements Climb ladders and stairs. Perform repetitive bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling. Lift heavy marine equipment and objects up to 75 pounds from various levels. Work outdoors in weather such as rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. Maintain a clean‑shaven face for respirator mask use to ensure an effective seal. Outcomes The Welder is expected to produce high‑quality, structurally sound welds that meet safety and regulatory standards critical to the integrity of marine vessels and equipment. Work must be completed efficiently, with minimal rework or delays, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and compliance. The welder should demonstrate reliability, adaptability to changing priorities, and a commitment to supporting team goals. Consistent adherence to safety protocols, timely completion of assigned tasks, and professional conduct across all job sites are key measures of success in this role.
