Aquatics Head Coach - Seasonal

Description/Duties This classification has been designated as a non‑benefited, non‑classified, non‑merit system at‑will position. The City of Mesa is currently recruiting Aquatics Head Coaches for the Summer Season, which runs from April 2026 through August 2026. Applicants may also be considered for year‑round positions. As an Aquatics Head Coach you will coach, mentor, and train athletes and volunteers in swim, artistic swimming, dive, or water polo teams, as well as junior lifeguard programs. You will develop athletes’ skills, supervise participants, take corrective action when needed, recruit and assign volunteers to matches, meets, and events, and monitor activities at public pools to prevent accidents. Additional duties include rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, checking pool water chemistry, managing cash handling, and performing general cleaning duties. You may be scheduled for lifeguard and/or swim lesson instructor assignments. Qualified applicants must successfully complete a skills test. The first skills test will be offered on Saturday, March 21, 2026; remaining staffing needs will be filled at a second skills test on Saturday, April 4, 2026. The test includes assessment of lifeguard skills, fitness level, and a verbal interview. Applications must be received online by 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2026, and you must receive an email invitation. Applications received after April 1 will be considered on an as‑needed basis. Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification classes are offered by the City of Mesa beginning in February, with a skills test review offered the Friday before each scheduled skills test. Aquatics Incentive Information The City of Mesa offers reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a Water Safety Instructor Certification, up to $229 each, subject to eligibility requirements provided upon employment offer. Minimum Qualifications: Good (3–9 months) experience as a lifeguard or three months of experience as a participant or coach in competitive swimming, artistic swimming, diving, or water polo. Special Requirements: Valid Lifeguard Certification and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certification. Substance Abuse Testing: Pre‑employment or pre‑placement alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy. Preferred/Desirable Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred; some (3–6 months) lifeguard experience desirable. All staff will be provided a black swimsuit/shorts uniform, two lifeguard t‑shirts, and a Fox 40 whistle.
