ResponsibilitiesThe Sterile Processing Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD), ensuring the safe and efficient decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This leadership role is accountable for maintaining regulatory compliance, promoting infection prevention best practices, managing staff performance, and supporting high-quality patient care.
The Sterile Processing Manager collaborates with surgical services, infection prevention, and hospital leadership to ensure operational excellence, staff development, and continuous process improvement while fostering a culture of safety and teamwork.
Department Leadership- Direct and oversee the daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department to ensure efficient workflow and exceptional service.
- Supervise, coach, mentor, and evaluate sterile processing staff while fostering a collaborative and accountable work environment.
- Manage staffing schedules, departmental coverage, and resource allocation to meet operational demands.
- Lead employee onboarding, education, competency validation, and cross-training initiatives.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for operational issues and facilitate timely problem resolution.
- Ensure all surgical instruments and reusable medical devices are properly decontaminated, inspected, assembled, sterilized, and distributed in accordance with established standards.
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and quality assurance testing of sterilizers, washer-disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, and related equipment.
- Ensure instrument availability to support scheduled procedures and respond proactively to operational challenges.
- Develop contingency plans for equipment failures or workflow disruptions.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, accreditation, and hospital standards governing sterile processing and infection prevention.
- Monitor biological testing, sterilization records, and quality assurance activities to maintain patient safety.
- Lead infection control audits and implement corrective actions when needed.
- Develop, review, and update departmental policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Promote continuous quality improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency and regulatory compliance.
- Partner with Surgical Services, Infection Prevention, Supply Chain, and hospital leadership to optimize instrument processing and patient outcomes.
- Assist in budgeting, resource utilization, equipment planning, and process improvement initiatives.
- Champion teamwork, communication, and a patient-centered culture aligned with the hospital's mission and values.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma and/or equivalent preferred. Graduate of accredited Scrub technician program preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of Sterile Processing experience preferred . Previous supervisory experience.
