The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City’s step placement policy.
This position may be underfilled as a Park Maintenance Technician I with a pay range of 409 - $18.19 - $28.20 hourly.
ELIGIBILITY LIST PREFERENCE ORDER
Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered (when the vacancy is open to external applicants).

POSITION DESIGNATION
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
JOB SUMMARY
This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Grounds Management Division of the Parks and Recreation Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary responsibility of Park Maintenance Technician II is to perform various ground maintenance repair tasks for the basic upkeep of City owned parks, natural spaces, trails, center medians and rights-of-ways. The skills, knowledge, and abilities required for full performance must be acquired prior to assuming the position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operating assigned vehicles, mowing equipment, and standard gasoline powered or electrical tools to perform various ground maintenance repair tasks.
- Following safety and maintenance procedures relating to the proper operation and condition of the assigned equipment or crew.
- Completing daily work orders, safety reports, and other job-related documentation.
- Performing work independently and in close proximity to other workers.
- Performing work in the absence of the front-line supervisor, assuming responsibility for other employees, equipment, and effective completion of projects.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
VETERANS PREFERENCE
Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
NOTE: If an individual is selected who does not possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver License, the individual will be classified as a Park Maintenance Technician I and be compensated at the Park Maintenance Technician I salary range until such time as required licensure is obtained. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a valid Class A Commercial Driver License within twelve (12) months from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.
Once selected individuals have obtained a valid Oklahoma Class A Commercial Driver’s License and are required to function at the full performance level as specified in the Job Requirements on the approved job description for the Park Maintenance Technician II job classification, they will career progress without competitive selection process, to Park Maintenance Technician II.

- Knowledge of and skill in using and operating various ground maintenance tools and larger equipment including flex-wing mowers and interstater mowers.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow safe work practices and procedures in the performance of assigned tasks.
- Skill in performing various ground maintenance and repair tasks.
- Skill in interpreting and completing standardized forms such as project assignment sheets, pre-trip inspections, work orders, maintenance request forms etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Primarily outside, constantly exposed to heat, cold, humidity, dust, etc.
- Possibility of injury from moving heavy objects.
- May be required to work in confined spaces or cramped positions for prolonged periods of time.
- Will work near moving objects such as traffic and machinery.
- Exposed to loud and insistent noise requiring the protection of earplugs.
- Possibility of occasional exposure to common allergy-causing agents such as bee or wasp stings and poison oak, ivy, and sumac.
- Occasionally required to work overtime.
- Daily local travel.
Note: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Strength and stamina enough to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 90 pounds such as fertilizer, ice melt, machinery and litter sacks.
- Stamina enough to exert oneself physically over short intervals of time in performing work such as digging, mowing, and carrying equipment and/or materials.
- Mobility enough to continuously move one's body from place to place.
- Manual dexterity and near vision enough to use items such as hand tools and equipment (i.e. Interstate or boom mowers, tractors with attachments, front-end loaders, skidders, zero-turn mowers, packer trucks, pickups, trailers, flatbeds, dump trucks, push mowers and lawn string trimmers, blowers, and edgers) used to perform maintenance and operations tasks.
- Hearing and speech enough to communicate in person and by two-way radio.
- Eye-hand-foot coordination.

Eligibility List: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 90 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.
