Senior Engineering Manager, Messaging Platforms

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Integrated Messaging team within the Messaging Platforms group. This full‑stack engineering team manages the end‑to‑end experience of our direct‑to‑consumer messaging, including high‑throughput delivery engines for native push notifications and internal tools that let newsrooms and marketing partners orchestrate communications. The team will expand into new channels such as WhatsApp and SMS, and the senior manager will design the necessary technology and team structure. Responsibilities Lead and mentor a full‑stack team of 7–12 engineers across backend distributed systems and frontend management applications. Guide the technical vision and roadmap for expanding our capabilities beyond native push into emerging messaging channels. Oversee high‑availability delivery services and the internal tools and UIs used by editorial and product teams. Ensure reliability and sub‑second delivery of push notifications. Partner with Product, Design, and Data teams to prioritize investments balancing operational needs and platform modernization. Contribute to the broader Messaging Platforms group through cross‑team leadership and cultural initiatives. Represent the team in technical discussions, identifying risks and making trade‑offs between feature velocity and stability. Report to the Director of Engineering for Messaging Platforms. Basic Qualifications 3+ years as an Engineering Manager with a track record of managing high‑performing teams. Experience leading full‑stack teams that maintain high‑availability systems, across frontend, backend, and DevOps disciplines. Demonstrated ability to drive transformation, guide teams through changes in technical strategy, organization, or product direction. Strong people‑development skills, with a history of coaching, mentoring, and fostering career growth. Preferred Qualifications Experience transitioning a team to an agentic AI workflow, leveraging AI agents or LLM‑based automation. Messaging domain expertise with push notification services (APNs, FCM), SMS gateways, or messaging APIs (e.g., WhatsApp Business API, Twilio). Experience with modern web stacks such as React, Node.js, or similar frameworks for consumer‑grade tooling. Cloud proficiency, especially AWS (including Lambda, serverless, event‑driven architectures, and observability). Base Pay : $185,000 – $210,000 USD per year. Eligible for variable pay, including an annual bonus and restricted stock.
