Facility Maintenance Specialist - Parks and Recreation

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONING OF WORK Performs a variety of building and grounds maintenance activities in support of Town facilities. An employee in this class participates in the maintenance of the Town facilities, parks, buildings, and grounds. Work includes performing building and parks maintenance including minor carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, and related maintenance and repair activities. Grounds activities include turf maintenance, installation and maintenance of plant materials, mowing, pesticide application, and related activities. Work requires public contact in answering complaints, resolving problems, and handling requests for service. Employee must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and self. Employee is subject to hazards in facilities maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, atmospheric conditions and oils. The employee may also be subject to OSHA’s final standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor and reviewed while in progress and upon completion to determine that proper work methods are being followed and that assignments are carried out correctly. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS THE EMPLOYEE MAY PERFORM A COMBINATION OF SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DUTIES AND OTHER DUTIES WHICH MAY BE ASSIGNED BY THE TOWN OF SMITHFIELD: Performs a variety of landscape maintenance work including turf management, plant installations, and maintenance, mowing, trimming, mulching, watering, fertilizing, and other tasks. Participates in parks maintenance work activities, including lining ball fields, installing game equipment, etc. Inspects parks, playgrounds and facilities for safety and makes records for liability purposes. Performs semi-skilled maintenance work (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) as needed to ensure adherence to operational procedures. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in parks, grounds, and facility maintenance and repair. Considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety standards associated with facility and parks maintenance and repair. Some knowledge of athletic field layout and preparation. Some knowledge of horticultural design and installations. Some knowledge of liability concerns related to providing parks and recreation services. Some knowledge of cleaning chemicals and pesticide application. Skill in the operation of equipment and tools utilized within the section. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to use chemical and pesticides properly and in accordance with State rules and regulations. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and less than 2 years of experience in the areas of building construction, grounds, and facility maintenance; or Equivalent combination of education and experience.
