Vice President, Controller

The Vice President (VP) Controller is a key leadership role, responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the credit union's financial operations and controls. The VP Controller is hands-on and leads a team by managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department including accurate accounting and maintenance of internal controls to ensure the protection of organizational assets. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, VP Controller actively collaborates with peers and executive leaders on all matters related to accounting, reporting, controls, decision support, and analytics in support of day-to-day operations, business initiatives and member service. The VP Controller must be willing to embrace a fast-paced, challenging environment and be passionate about accuracy, consistency and process improvement. This executive level role serves as key financial leader, providing strategic insight to senior leadership while mentoring and developing a high-performing accounting team focused on internal and external member service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Direct the functions of the Accounting Department including financial analysis, cash management, fixed assets, accounts payable, prepaids and general ledger account reconcilement. Ensure optimal efficiency of financial operations and adherence to stated credit union policies. Responsible for the general ledger, ensuring timely, efficient and accurate transaction posting from all areas of the credit union. Lead the month-end book close process ensuring accuracy and efficiency. Oversee and analyze all facets of liquidity management to include daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly liquidity actual and forecasted needs along with applicable financial risk. O ptimization of cash balances across multiple bank accounts. Serve as the subject matter expert on all technical accounting matters, ensuring proper application of GAAP in day-to-day transactions, regulatory filings, management reports and financial statements. Ensure the staff understand the proper application of GAAP. Manage & train direct reports to maximize productivity, efficiency, and the potential of the accounting & finance employees, including hiring, directing job assignments, monitoring staff performance, coaching, counseling, training, assuring compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational mission, values, policies and work rules. Monitor capital adequacy, net worth ratios and ensure compliance with all applicable financial regulations and metrics. Responsible for preparing and reviewing advanced and/or complex accounting functions including, but not limited to, investment accounting, loan participation accounting and indirect dealer reserve accounting. Oversee the development and monthly review of financials to ensure accurate and timely financial information is provided to management and the Board of Directors to effectively manage the operations and be accountable to members and regulatory agencies Analyze and manage the monthly financial budget reports including monthly profit and loss and provide analysis on budget vs. actual variance reporting. Monitor and identify trends within the accounting data. Ensure proper controls are in place, including reconciliations, performed and reviewed diligently and in a timely manner. Oversee the accounts payable process, ensuring invoices are paid in a timely manner in adherence to policies. Continuously explore opportunities for automation. Oversee all technology related initiatives for the accounting department. Oversee all accounting related policies and procedures including annual reviews. Responsible for NCUA Call Report (Form 5300), ensuring timely filing with regulator. Coordinate the annual financial statement audit process and remediate all findings. Oversee the preparation and analysis of the reserve for Current Expedited Credit Losses (CECL). Oversee the CECL system and ensure reserves are accounted for properly under GAAP and internal policies. Analyze monthly results, summarize and present findings to senior leadership. Assist with annual budget, planning and forecasting activities pertaining to non-interest income and expense. Partner with the Director of Finance on balance sheet and margin planning. Be an active member of the senior leadership team, collaborate with leadership to drive success. Collaborate with other credit union leaders to advance the profession, share insights and contribute to initiatives that improve financial well-being and operational excellence across the industry. Provide accounting support to other credit union affiliates, including charitable foundation and CUSOs. Serve as a member of ALCO committee. Support the CFO on additional projects as needed. Qualification Requirements Educational/Experience Requirement: Bachelor's degree in finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, or a related field required. In depth knowledge of GAAP, the credit union industry and related accounting principles. CPA license preferred but not required. Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting leadership in a credit union or bank. Experience presenting to senior leadership. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Inspire, mentor, develop and lead accounting staff. Must be passionate about leadership and building strong, high performing teams. Ability to dive deep into researching general ledger entries and manage multiple priorities. Strong analytical skills, ability to work independently to make sound judgements Expert use of Microsoft Excel. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Thorough knowledge of credit union operations. Strong collaboration skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex information. Strong knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Financial analysis and performance management. Proficiency in accounts payable and budgeting software. Experience managing relationships with auditors, regulators and external vendors. Ability to lead through change and drive continuous improvement. Salary: The anticipated starting salary for this role is $120,000. We offer a range of benefits and perks based on eligibility.
