Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant works under the direction of the Director of Nursing, Charge Nurse, and their assigned Provider. This role directs patient flow and improves provider productivity. The Medical Assistant is an integral part of the interdisciplinary patient care team.

The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care for patients from birth-adulthood including vital signs, collection of specimens, performing screenings, data collection, EKGs, and assisting with procedures as needed. This role is also responsible for completing pre-visit planning and participating in daily pre-visit rounding with assigned provider. Community health opportunities for this role include assisting providers on home visits or out to community health partners on the mobile medical outreach vehicle. The Medical Assistant will complete all required learning in the online health learning system as well as attend annual clinical competencies.

Additional general requirements include a professional positive attitude, understanding of customer service principles, trustworthiness, ability to multitask, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Job qualifications/requirements include:

• Works as part of patient-care team in conjunction with physicians, APRN's, nurses, PSRs, CHWs and other staff.
• Obtains patient vital signs, including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse respirations and temperature when appropriate.
• Maintains good relations and fosters effective public relations with patients, medical staff, and other medical providers.
• Ensures accurate maintenance of patients' electronic medical records.
• Ensures patient confidentiality.
• Maintains established policies and procedures, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Performs various clerical duties including all responsibilities of the receptionist when necessary.
• Interprets and explains to patients and their families, charges, services and policies regarding payment and financial assistance.
• Assists in pre-planning for patient visits, looking up patient documentation from outside sources and assuring documentation in chart, i.e. Epic.
• Ensures that policies and procedures for maintenance and release of medical records are followed and treated as confidential information.
• Analyzes and updates charts on an ongoing basis.
• Assists providers with procedures as needed.
• Prepares examining rooms with appropriate instruments and supplies and keeps rooms clean at all times.
• Positions patient on table and explains procedures.
• Performs electrocardiogram and POC testing when ordered by provider.
• Collects specimens as directed and sends them to the appropriate laboratory.
• Monitors medical condition of patients and reports changes to the provider.
• Charts results of various tests in patient's medical record.
• Answers patient's inquiries concerning test orders.
• Performs quality control procedures.
• Uses appropriate safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazard waste.
• Responds to emergency situations.
• Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service.
• Maintains and cares for office and clinical equipment and supplies.
• Attends educational updates.
• Maintains current CPR training.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.
• Perform community outreach to assist in closing gaps in care.
• Community outreach to promote CHWC.
• Assist in closing gaps as identified by the Social Determinants of Health screenings.
• Assists with Prior Authorizations.
• Assist with scheduling of testing appointments.

Education: Completion of an Medical Assistance Training Program

Experience: One year experience as a MA in a primary care center.

Language Skills: Must speak, write and read English proficiently. Spanish preferred but not required.

Licensure/Certification Required: CPR certification is required.

Teleworking: This position requires teleworking if requested.
