Agency State Bureau of Investigation Division Intelligence Job Classification Title Financial Investigator I (NS) Position Number 65040878 Grade NC16 About Us The State Bureau of Investigation’s mission is to serve Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, and District Attorneys as well as State and Federal partners, by investigating crimes and providing technical assistance in order to increase public safety for the citizens of the state of North Carolina. The SBI does so by conducting criminal investigations of allegations in areas of jurisdiction including narcotics, arson, election laws, misuse of state property, environmental crimes, human trafficking, child sexual abuse in day care centers, and threats made against public officials. The SBI provides support to local agencies related to computer crime investigations, use of force investigations, deaths in custody, crime scenes, financial crimes, missing and endangered persons, public corruption, cold cases, K9, special response team, bomb squad, and air wing. The SBI serves as North Carolina's repository of information on criminal history records, fingerprint identification, expungements, sex offender registry, and concealed handgun permits. The SBI manages the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAAC), which is the fusion center for the state of North Carolina, as well as the Behavioral Threat Assessment Unit, which assesses and manages threats of mass violence. Description of Work Primary Purpose of Position: This Financial Investigator is assigned to the Human Trafficking Unit of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). This position will be assigned to one (1) of the eight (8) regionally located district offices closest to their residence and report to that work location Monday-Friday. The SBI is responsible for enforcing the laws of North Carolina by investigating crimes, analyzing evidence, identifying, and apprehending criminals and developing new investigative techniques in cooperation with fellow members of the law enforcement community. The SBI serves primarily in assisting and supporting local law enforcement across the State. The HTU serves the primary purpose of identifying and rescuing victims of human trafficking by actively investigating all forms of human trafficking using a victim-centered, multi-disciplinary approach and prosecute traffickers who use force, fraud, and/or coercion, to force victims into sex trafficking, child sex trafficking, and labor trafficking. The primary focus of this position will be working to identify and protect victims of human trafficking. Key Responsibilities Perform professional financial and analytical work in the detection and investigation of criminal violations of applicable criminal laws, specifically human trafficking. Perform complex financial analysis and assist Special Agents in documenting and organizing case information for review by prosecutors. Present on relevant topics regarding financial aspects of human trafficking. Position/Physical Requirements Must be able to work 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional overnight travel is required in this position. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences This is a time-limited position, subject to funding availability, which may last up to 36 months. Time limited employees are eligible for State Benefits. Although the length of time this position will be active cannot be determined, it has the potential to extend up to 3 years (36 months). Salary Range: $57,983 - $85,000 Salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations for the advertised position. Management also prefers: Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices.
