We are currently seeking a skilled and safety-focused Maintenance Technician I (Diesel Technician / Mechanic) to support our school bus and motorcoach fleet operations in Southaven, Mississippi. This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs), diagnostics, repairs, and roadside service work while ensuring all vehicles meet company, DOT, manufacturer, and state safety standards. Passenger transportation experience is strongly preferred due to the safety-sensitive nature of school bus and motorcoach operations.

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician I performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair work on school buses, motorcoaches, and support vehicles. The technician must maintain a strong safety mindset, accurately document repairs, and support fleet reliability and uptime initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess strong experience in heavy-duty diesel systems including Cummins engines, air brake systems, electrical diagnostics, HVAC systems, and emissions-related repairs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

· Maintain a safety-oriented mindset at all times and follow all company safety policies and procedures.

· Perform preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs) in accordance with DOT, state, manufacturer, and company standards.

· Diagnose and repair Cummins diesel engines, air brake systems, ABS brake systems, electrical and multiplex systems, HVAC/A/C systems, steering and suspension systems, drivetrain systems, and emissions systems including DPF, DEF, and SCR components.

· Utilize diagnostic software and troubleshooting tools to identify and repair vehicle faults.

· Perform electrical diagnostics including wiring, charging systems, sensors, and communication faults.

· Conduct repairs in compliance with all Federal, State, DOT, and company safety requirements.

· Test-drive vehicles to verify repairs and ensure proper operation.

· Perform road calls and emergency roadside repairs as assigned.

· Properly document all repairs, inspections, labor hours, and parts usage within the maintenance software system.

· Identify and report additional maintenance concerns or unsafe conditions discovered during inspections or repairs.

· Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and productive work area.

· Communicate effectively with Lead Technicians, Shop Management, and Operations personnel.

· Follow all environmental, OSHA, and safety compliance standards.

· Support shop productivity, fleet uptime, and operational reliability initiatives.

Required Qualifications

· Minimum of 5 years of medium- or heavy-duty diesel repair experience preferred.

· School bus, transit bus, or motorcoach maintenance experience strongly preferred.

· Strong working knowledge of air brake systems, Cummins diesel engines, electrical diagnostics, HVAC/A/C systems, diesel aftertreatment systems (DPF, DEF, SCR), and steering and suspension systems.

· Experience diagnosing and repairing ABS, multiplex, and electrical communication systems.

· Experience using diagnostic software and OEM troubleshooting systems preferred, including Cummins INSITE, JPRO/Noregon, and OEM diagnostic platforms.

· Ability to properly complete PMIs and repair documentation.

· Must possess or be able to obtain a valid CDL within 45 days of hire.

· Must possess or be willing to obtain passenger and air brake endorsements.

· Must possess a complete set of basic technician hand tools.

· Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

· Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

· Must pass DOT pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

· ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications preferred.

· ASE Master Technician progression preferred.

· Technical school or vocational diesel technology training preferred.

· OEM certifications and/or manufacturer training preferred, including Cummins, Allison, Bendix, Meritor, Carrier/Thermo King, Blue Bird, Thomas Built Buses, IC Bus, Prevost, and MCI.

· OEM online training platform completion and continued technical development is highly encouraged.

· Experience using Fleetio maintenance software is a plus.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.

· Ability to work in varying shop and weather conditions.

· Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling.

· Ability to safely operate company vehicles and shop equipment.
