Position Summary

\n

The Code Cart Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the management and readiness of code carts across Duke University Hospital. This position ensures accurate inventory, timely replenishment, regulatory and policy compliance, and operational readiness to support emergency patient care. The technician also provides training, supports process improvement, and collaborates with nursing, pharmacy, and interdisciplinary teams

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

\n

\n
• Inspect, assemble, and track code carts to ensure they are accurately stocked, compliant with applicable policies and standards, and ready for emergency use.
\n
• Systematically audit and replenish medications and supplies in code carts in accordance with the Duke University Hospital (DUH) Pharmacy Code Blue Policy and established inventory standards.
\n
• Coordinate and oversee day-to-day code cart operations at Duke University Hospital, ensuring consistent management, timely replenishment, and readiness to support emergency patient care.
\n
• Order and maintain accurate inventory of medications and supplies stocked in code carts, ensuring appropriate par levels, timely replenishment, and effective inventory management.
\n
• Travel to off-site Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHiP) locations to inspect, replenish, and manage code carts in accordance with established standards.
\n
• Develop, maintain, and implement policies and procedures related to code cart management at Duke University Hospital and DHiP locations.
\n
• Provide specialized training and education to pharmacy technicians on code cart management, emergency preparedness, and related operational procedures.
\n
• Serve as the designated pharmacy liaison to the Duke Patient Response Oversight Committee, facilitating communication and collaboration related to code cart operations and emergency response readiness.
\n
• Staff inpatient pharmacy operations on a regular cadence to support operational needs and maintain proficiency in core pharmacy technician functions.
\n
• Respond to requests from nursing and pharmacy areas for code cart support, troubleshooting, replenishment, and other related needs.
\n
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and provide recommendations to enhance the safety, efficiency, standardization, and reliability of code cart operations.
\n
• Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices related to code carts and emergency preparedness, and participate in relevant training and professional development.
\n
• Comply with applicable health, safety, regulatory, and Duke Health policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications at this Level

\n

 

\n

Education

\n

\n
• High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program.
\n

\n

or

\n

\n
• Acceptance into pharmacy school.
\n

\n

or

\n

\n
• High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care related experience.
\n
• College course work in business/management, position specific advanced coursework, and/or an equivalent combination is preferred.
\n

\n

 

\n

Experience

\n

\n
• Minimum of two years of pharmacy technician experience is required.
\n

\n

 

\n

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:           

\n

\n
• North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
\n
• Pharmacy Technician certification is required from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).
\n

\n

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology and pharmaceutical calculations.
\n
• Proficient computer skills including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
\n
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
\n
• Requires critical thinking skills with ability to implement solutions.
\n
• Excellent customer service skills including prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure complete satisfaction.

• Strong organizational skills including staying focused on assigned task and using time and resources effectively and efficiently to achieve job expectations.
\n
• Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, reaching, stretching, stooping, and sitting for prolonged times; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing functions of the job; ability to lift up to 20 lbs., while walking, stooping, bending and reaching.
