Structural Project Manager

Overview A licensed engineer in a managerial position that is responsible for project successes. Leads multiple project teams in planning, coordinating and administering respective projects through all phases of development. Possesses leadership and communication skills, a flexible attitude, ability to solve problems creatively and the ability to manage effective client relationships. Embraces the firm’s values by personally influencing client service, innovation and communication. Responsibilities Manages multiple structural project team efforts to facilitate effective execution of project design, delivery of implementation documents, and construction administration, including post‑occupancy evaluation and lessons learned. Acts as client contact point, strengthening connections with clients by understanding their project needs and progress. Exercises communication skills on critical issues throughout the scope of the project. Manages and oversees implementation documents, discusses project technical issues, and coordinates with other disciplines. Works with project teams to establish design solutions that can be implemented within constraints of project goals, budgets, timelines, and local ordinances and codes. Collaborates on all phases of the design process from kickoff to construction administration; attends on‑site visits and field reviews as necessary. Responsible for detailed code analysis, structural analysis and calculations, and quality of implementation documents. Delegates tasks and holds team members accountable for completion. Reviews engineering work and implementation documents for accuracy and completeness. Manages and supervises project team interactions both internally and with other project participants. Provides teams guidance and motivation for performance. Participates in project team’s self‑evaluation to distill and distribute lessons learned. Applies products and materials according to HKS standards, helps define best practice and quality expectations. Integrates HKS expertise and innovation in all projects, while actively seeking opportunities to incorporate HKS best practices, sustainable design solutions, subject matter expertise, and resources strategically and efficiently for the client, user and community. Travel will be required. Qualifications Education and Experience Accredited professional degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering or related field. Typically 9+ years of experience. Firsthand and sustained experience in all phases of engineering and construction. Licenses and Certifications Professional engineering or structural engineering licensure required (structural engineering licensure preferred). Sustainable design accreditation preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Advanced – expert‑level experience, knowledge or skills. Intermediate – experience, knowledge or skills required to produce high‑quality solutions or work. Basic – familiar with primary concepts or capabilities and may perform elementary functions depending on role. Basic understanding of the use of Revit and BIM in the delivery of implementation documents. Intermediate knowledge of project management tools (Vision, Portfolio, etc.) preferred. Intermediate experience in MS Office Suite; including Microsoft Project, Microsoft Teams and Excel required. Intermediate knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines required. Advanced knowledge of integrated design, engineering building systems and QA/QC process required. Advanced knowledge of building codes, material design standards and constructability required. Intermediate experience with managing a team and performing duties in a fast‑paced environment required. Intermediate ability to manage multiple project teams with a diplomatic and collaborative leadership style that values relationships and collaboration, both internal and external required. Intermediate ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing required. Intermediate ability to problem‑solve and apply innovative solutions required. Intermediate ability to collaborate and encourage collaboration in a team environment required. Intermediate ability to work on multiple projects at the same time required. Intermediate ability to effectively meet deadlines at expected quality required. Base Salary Range Base Salary Range: $110k - $155k annually - Chicago and Washington DC locations only. The estimate displayed represents the general base salary range of candidates hired in the Chicago and Washington DC locations only. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range based on the location of the role. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
