Medical Underwriting Manager

Location: Kansas City Metro Area (Overland Park, KS)

Schedule: Hybrid (3 days onsite, 2 days remote after training)

Aston Carter is partnering with a client in the Kansas City metro area to hire a Medical Underwriting Manager . This leadership role is responsible for overseeing a team focused on small group medical underwriting while maintaining underwriting quality, operational efficiency, and exceptional service standards.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in small group medical underwriting , database underwriting , and people leadership . This position offers the opportunity to influence underwriting strategy, drive process improvements, and develop a high-performing team, with future growth potential into a Director-level role.

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of medical underwriters.
• Manage daily underwriting operations for small group health insurance business.
• Oversee new business, renewals, eligibility reviews, rescission reviews, and policy issuance.
• Make final underwriting, risk, and rate determination decisions on complex cases.
• Establish performance expectations, productivity goals, and quality standards.
• Review underwriting reports, medical cost data, and renewal activity to support business decisions.
• Partner with sales teams, agents, general agents, and program managers to ensure excellent service and communication.
• Monitor underwriting accuracy, compliance, and consistency across the team.
• Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
• Maintain and update underwriting guidelines, procedures, and documentation.
• Serve as Acting Director of Underwriting when needed.

• 3+ years of small group medical underwriting experience .
• Prior Underwriting Manager, Supervisor, or Team Lead experience with direct reports.
• Database underwriting experience .
• Experience underwriting groups ranging from 2-125 employees .
• Strong understanding of medical underwriting principles, risk assessment, and rate development.
• Experience reviewing and approving renewals, new business, and eligibility determinations.
• Proven ability to make sound underwriting and risk decisions.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including reporting and data analysis.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

• Experience within a health insurance carrier, TPA, or employee benefits organization.
• Experience managing external or contract underwriters.
• Process improvement and workflow optimization experience.
• Ability to step into leadership responsibilities when needed.
• Interest in long-term career growth into a Director-level position.

This is a Permanent position based out of Overland Park, KS.

The pay range for this position is $70000.00 - $90000.00/yr.

Eligible for PTO and retirement

This is a hybrid position in Overland Park,KS.

This position is anticipated to close on Aug 4, 2026.
