Medical Imaging Supervisor

About the Job This position is responsible for the supervision of the daily technical operations of the Small and Large Animal Medical Imaging and assigned services in the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The Clinical Supervisor 4 is the fourth (lead) level within the Animal Health Job Family, and is responsible for providing professional support in a specific area(s) of animal health. Gives exceptional care to our patients and provides a positive and a professional learning environment for staff, students, residents and faculty. Coordinates the activities and supervises the technical and/or administrative staff assigned within the designated service area. Role models excellent customer service and actively participates in quality improvement initiatives. Provides and supervises the training of techniques, protocols and procedures to new and current staff, interns and students. Works with other supervisors to identify areas of concern and finds solutions to problems. Upholds the mission, vision and values of the VMC, looking for ways to continuously improve customer service; helping the VMC survive in a competitive environment. Job Responsibilities Supervisory (45%) Clinical lead for multiple services, equipment, personnel, and general upkeep and maintenance of the clinical space. Maintain the Medical Imaging schedule. Supervise staff that work in clinical spaces. Exercise authority to hire, transfer, suspend, promote, discharge, assign work, reward, discipline, and adjust grievances. Steps in to fill emergent shift vacancies. Review service finances (AR, OT, accessions, expenses). Recommends cost savings. Make recommendations for repair and replacement and advanced diagnostics on equipment. Capital equipment submission. Responsible for department inventory and participates in finance discussions. Manage and maintain quality and control of radiographic equipment. Responsible for notifying appropriate repair personnel for equipment problems. Analyze and make recommendations for department inventory and participates in finance discussions. Interviews, hires, orients and trains staff. Sets performance goals, provides feedback and coaching to meet those goals. Trains staff as well as students. Develops staff skill levels. Supervises and provides infection control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working environment. Promote a culture of positivity, teamwork and inclusivity. Resolve issues as they arise. Understand and assure policies are carried out within the context of AFSCME collective bargaining contract for labor represented employees. Maintains environment in inspection‑ready condition adhering to agency standards. Understands inspection timelines. Navigate escalated situations involving faculty, staff, and students. Mediates team member conversations as needed. Provide guidance to staff and offer alternative solutions that meet the needs of all parties. Radiation safety officer for VMC. Technician Role (25%) Provide assistance to staff, students, residents, and faculty providing clinical services to patients in an educational setting. Understands and is able to perform Medical Imaging diagnostic and monitoring procedures associated with small and large animals at a competent level. Steps in to fill emergent shift vacancies or provides in–service presence to their areas. Must be able to restrain and handle animals and/or assist with animal restraint and handling. Under the direction of DVM's, performs a variety of medical and diagnostic procedures depending upon clinical indications and area of service; may perform intravenous and related therapies (i.e. fluids, anesthesia, etc.), obtain fluid or tissue samples, perform biopsy techniques, etc. With oversight by a DVM, applies clinical job knowledge and competence to the management of the patient. Answers questions and explains or demonstrates procedures and equipment for clients, residents, interns, senior veterinary students, and technician students; assists with teaching labs. Performs record‑keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording of: procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communications, census information, etc. Responsible for ensuring that all services and supplies are charged according to the hospital fee schedule. May prepare and maintain a daily service schedule including facilities such as operating rooms, specialty areas, pharmacies, etc. Must adhere to safety and infection control policies and procedures. Must have the ability to work in a clinical setting and maintain, prepare, and follow clinic protocols. Assist clinicians and other staff members to assure efficient service and provide good customer service. Assist with Medical Imaging as needed. Training and Staff Development (15%) Coordinate training schedules with training technicians. Organizes training experience for staff and students as indicated. Coordinate teaching with the DVM's and staff. Facilitate and support staff participation in professional development, educational opportunities, workshops and/or seminars as appropriate. Develop and maintain comprehensive training checklists. Meet with staff to maintain consistent communication regarding policies, procedures and concerns. Ensure staff compliance with all relevant policies and guidelines including health and safety, OSHA, School and University policies. Verify training, certification is complete. Lead the training and onboarding process for new staff, including student team members. Schedule remedial training as needed for existing employees. Conduct mid‑probationary and final probationary reviews for all collective bargaining unit staff members. Encourages incident reporting, teaches importance, reviews, investigates and reports findings to direct leaders. Plans, Prepares, and Devises Work Schedules (10%) Provides daily direction to staff to accomplish work goals; coordinates schedules, assigns responsibilities, provides clear direction, sets priorities, coordinates work, builds in accountability and monitors progress. Create staffing schedules to support patient care as well as student and staff needs. Plan, coordinate and approve temporary staffing as needed. Approve/deny time and absence requests as appropriate. Coordinate the work schedules for all direct report staff, including student staff and those covering. Optimize staff labor and maintain standards while ensuring adequate time is allocated for employee meal breaks, meetings, and professional development. Communicate all schedule changes to staff effectively and promptly. Respond quickly to unplanned staff absences by reorganizing schedules to ensure all essential work areas remain covered. Additional Duties (5%) Provide backup for team members as needed and other special projects as assigned. Continue professional development through attendance of courses, workshops, seminars and other meetings; maintain professional certification and licensure. Participates in daily rounds. Assists, as necessary, in clinical research trials to include literature searches and data collation; performs related duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned by Clinician or Director of Patient Services. Work Environment This work is generally performed at The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, and at the Veterinary Medical Center. This work environment may include exposure to noise, bright/low lighting, temperature variations, animal bodily fluids and waste, and allergens such as mold, dust, hay and animal hair and dander. Work Schedule Varies - some flexibility to meet internal and external client needs. Required Qualifications BA/BS in related fields and 5 years of relevant work experience, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 9 years. Technical training (i.e. graduate of Veterinary Technician or equivalent program, licensed as an MVMA/MAVT technician) - supervisory education and skills training required. A minimum of 3 years experience within a veterinary care or similar health care related environment. Knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology. Knowledge of proper restraint and handling of animals. Computer skills in word‑processing, spreadsheets and data entry. Working knowledge of equipment is used in a veterinary teaching hospital. Thorough working knowledge of equipment used within an area of specialization. Project management and meeting management skills. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing as well as the ability to work in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications Two years of supervisory experience in a veterinary or healthcare environment, along with experience in private practice and educational settings. Familiarity with union and collective bargaining regulations.
