Job Description
Note: This is an FRA-covered position. FRA-covered employees are those employees who have been assigned to perform Roadway Worker duties and are therefore subject to the random pool for monthly drug and alcohol testing.
Purpose Of Position: Performs the full range of maintenance and repairs on electrical hydraulic and mechanical systems, of all equipment under the jurisdiction of the Mechanical Department: to include, but not limited to piston bullys, ballast regulators, locomotive cranes, electronic tampers, excavators, dozers, loaders, forklifts, generator sets, hydraulic tools and stationary machinery.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
- Inspects, troubleshoots, tests, adjusts, repairs, and performs maintenance for all heavy equipment, locomotive cranes, overhead cranes, and shop machinery. Performs hyrail scheduled maintenance and FRA inspections.
- Performs periodic inspections and heavy maintenance on internal customer forklifts, air compressors, overhead cranes, shop machinery, and generators.
- Inspects, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, performs maintenance, and changes components on: hydraulic and pneumatic tools, and light, medium and heavy trucks.
Factor 1 - Knowledge
Ability to inspect, repair, change components, and maintain a variety of equipment including but not limited to: electrical systems, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, and oil systems; heating and air conditioning systems; refrigeration systems, trailer van heating and cooling units; on and off-track equipment; cranes and shop machinery; and power cars. Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of electronics, electricity, and mechanics, both in static and in dynamic states which has been demonstrated through past and current work experience. Ability and skill to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and machines which are common to the railroad industry. Knowledge of pertinent regulations such as, but not limited to, CFR, FRA, and OSHA.
Factor 2 - Responsibilities
Works under the supervision of the HE Mechanical Supervisor, who sets overall priorities, establishes the work load, and reviews completed work on spot check basis for adequacy and compliance with objectives of the assignment. Generally, works with minimum direct supervision and will be required to be self-motivated.
Factor 3 - Physical Effort
Lifts and carries tools, materials, and equipment which may, at times, exceed 50 pounds. Pushes and/or pulls objects weighing up to several hundred pounds. Requires walking, climbing, crawling, bending, and standing for extended lengths of time.
Factor 4 - Work Conditions
Work may be done indoors or outdoors in all types of conditions. Works on concrete, earth, metal, and wood surfaces in crowded areas near moving machinery and equipment. At times, these surfaces may be uneven, slippery, icy, muddy, and/or greasy. Heating, ventilation, and lighting in most areas may be poor. Exposure to electric arc flashes, varying degrees of hot and cold conditions, all common to the industry. Frequent exposure to dust, dirt, slag, grease, grime as well as loud noises, vibrations, gases, and fumes from petroleum products. Not uncommon to occasionally encounter chemical compounds such as acids or caustic solutions, all of which are common in the industry.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at a journeymen level and have experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic with four (4) years practical experience or has completed a four (4) year apprenticeship as Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Working knowledge of both mechanical and electrical crafts preferred. Ability to inspect, test, repair, troubleshoot, replace components, and maintain a variety of electrical systems, hydraulic systems, fuel, cooling, oil systems, heating, and air conditioning systems; on and off-track equipment. Knowledge of the basic principles of electronics, electricity, and mechanics is required. Must be able to weld (GMAW, TIG, SMAW, and FCAW) and use a cutting torch. Must be able to read, write, and communicate; interpret blueprints, schematics, work instructions, and other technical guides of varying degrees of complexity. Must be capable of using a respirator. Must have a valid Class B CDL, or able to obtain a Class B CDL within one year.

Retirement Plans ARRC Pension Plan Participation is mandatory. You are automatically enrolled in the Plan when you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. You may enroll once you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Depending on the bargaining unit, there may be an employer match. 457 Deferred Compensation Plan Participation is optional for non-represented employees.
Insurance and Flexible Spending Plans All plans are optional except the RR Dental Plan for bargaining unit employees. Health Insurance Plan A comprehensive health insurance plan, self-insured by the ARRC and administered by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska. Coverage is also available for the employee's spouse and dependent children. ARRC and the participant share the premium cost. Bargaining unit employees are Eligibility after 90 days, and non-represented employees are eligible as of the date of hire. The Railroad offers a Prefered Provider Organization plan (PPO Blue Essentials) and a Consumer Directed Healthcare Plan with a Health Saving Account (Gold Essentials). The Plans have the following features. The Railroad also offers two dental plans. The Railroad National Dental for represented employees. The Alaska Railroad Optional Dental Plan for both represented and non-represented employees.
