Performs a variety of technical radiologic procedures using standard, portable and/or specialized X‑ray equipment to apply prescribed ionizing radiation to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients’ illnesses and injuries. Performs related tasks such as assisting patients in positioning for correct anatomical exposure, maintaining order and cleanliness of work area, and performing routine clerical tasks. I. Major Responsibilities Prepares patient for exams, ensuring comfort and modesty. Checks patient identification and obtains informed consent or contrast questionnaire. Consults with Radiologist regarding contrast administration and imaging protocols. Participates in patient transfer when needed, positions and instructs patients to obtain desired imaging results. Follows department policies and procedures. Adjusts techniques as required by physicians, supervisors or self‑improvement initiatives. Provides protection to unaffected body areas from radiation exposure in accordance with safety standards. Calculates and selects proper technical factors, equipment, and positions patient to provide images per protocol or requisition form. Evaluates images for proper identification and diagnostic quality, adjusting techniques as necessary. Checks equipment for proper operation. Operates imaging equipment per diagnostic procedure, maintaining computed radiography and direct imaging equipment. Reviews electronic images for acceptable quality and completeness. Uses portable X‑ray equipment for procedures in patient rooms, surgery, or where transfer is not feasible. Transfers or duplicates films/images as directed. Follows PACs workflow, working with electronic work lists and repair exceptions to ensure all images meet quality standards and exams are completed in the RIS in a timely fashion. Initiates hard stop when appropriate and notifies staff. Monitors patients receiving contrast for adverse reactions; explains procedures to patients and families; answers questions. Assists physicians in specialized examinations by preparing equipment, syringes, contrast media, and sterile supplies. Ensures proper imaging and equipment availability per Universal Protocol. Ensures images and requisitions are properly completed for patient identification, billing, and statistical purposes. Prepares images for Radiologist review. Works as a Radiographic Technologist and performs duties in other modalities as needed. Maintains competence by rotating into radiology areas. Reports hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor; removes defective equipment out of service. Maintains work area clean and orderly; ensures rooms are properly supplied; initiates requisitions for supplies as needed. Understands and practices ALARA principles, including use and exchange of personal dosimeters. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities Complies with departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. All responsibilities are essential job functions. II. Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education (Required) RTR licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including a temporary (1‑year) MA license. ARRT certification in Radiology required within 12 months from date of hire as a condition of continued employment. BLS certification. Some specialty modalities may require additional formal training and certification. Experience/Skills (Required) Maintain area‑specific CEUs for ARRT and DPH according to regulation. Unless certification, licensure, or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience can be substituted for the above requirements. III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions Work is considered medium. Position requires indoor work in a normal patient care environment.
