POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Production holds the primary responsibility for delivering the technical execution of all Woolly Mammoth productions on time and within budget, with an emphasis on facilitating clear and transparent communication between and among Production staff, other departments at Woolly, and creative teams working on each production. Reporting to the Artistic Director and Managing Director, this position supervises the Production Department, aligning human and financial resources to realize individual projects at the highest level, while working to maximize the overall capacity of the Production Department in service to Woolly’s artistic mission. This position is a member of the Core Leadership Team at Woolly Mammoth.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee the execution of all production requirements to support Woolly’s mission and Guiding Principles. Facilitate timely communication among directors, designers, and production staff as designs are produced while assessing financial resources, staffing, and scheduling restraints. Work collaboratively with all stakeholders. Lead by example, modeling values, positive behaviors and best practices for the organization. Ensure a safe and supportive working environment for all. Lead staff in maintaining a climate of excellence, accountability, respect, and equity. Establish, communicate, and manage the production schedule; coordinate rehearsals, load-ins, strikes, and other production-related shows and events in our theatre and offsite. Consult with all relevant stakeholders. Foster positive labor relations; ensure compliance with union contracts (USA, AEA, SDC). Develop and maintain annual production budgets. Oversee all production-related expenditures and establish methods of maintaining budget control. Develop and maintain production and organizational calendar for the upcoming season, in collaboration with staff, balancing the material and human needs of staff and shows. Develop and refine long range production department budget and long range production department staffing plan. Coordinate production facilities and equipment improvements and capital project management. Establish positive relationships with staff, artists, board members, and other stakeholders. Build and execute designer and crew contracts and ensure fulfillment of contractual obligations. Identify, hire, and maintain relationships with Stage Management teams (SM, ASM, PA). Supervise Department Heads in the search and hiring of all overhire and crew positions for productions, as well as contract and onboard those overhire and crew. Actively lead and support Woolly’s commitment to safety in the workplace, including ensuring proper leadership of Woolly’s Safety Committee. Actively support Woolly’s commitments to Accessibility, collaborating with the Accessibility Committee in this effort. Commit to Woolly’s policy of anti-racism and radical inclusivity. This includes participating in anti-bias/anti-harassment training, familiarizing yourself with the policies in the employee handbook, using Woolly’s Liberation Library as an educational resource, engaging in EDI work at Woolly, and furthering your own independent journey with anti-racism. Cross-departmental collaboration, including participating in at least one Woolly working group, committee, and/or taskforce outside of your own department. Advocate for policies both internally and externally that further advance Woolly’s stated values on an organizational, local, and national scale. Contribute in meaningful ways to the culture. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Responsible for providing employees timely, candid, and constructive performance feedback; developing employees to their fullest potential and providing challenging opportunities that enhance employee career growth; developing the appropriate talent pool to ensure adequate bench strength and succession planning; recognizing and rewarding employees for accomplishments. Additionally, this position will: Select, train, and develop an effective and efficient staff including: Interviewing applicants and select new employees; Supervising the department orientation and training of new employees; Recommending salary increases, promotions, transfers, disciplinary actions, and dismissals in conformance with company policy and procedures; and Conducting annual performance reviews. Have substantial knowledge of leadership, teamwork, and management principles in line with the values of the organization. Direct Reports: Technical Director, Audio Supervisor , Costume Supervisor, Lighting + Video Supervisor, Production Coordinator, and other Production personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Broad background in technical theater, including at least 5 years of managing a staff; preference for experience managing a production department for a theater or other performing arts organization. Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Aptitude for leading and cultivating teams with a multiplicity of perspectives. Background or training in cultural competencies, fostering and cultivating diverse teams of people in terms of gender expression, race, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class and immigrant status. Ability to coordinate multiple projects and conflicting priorities to manage overlapping show schedules. Knowledge of budget management systems. Excellent written and communication skills. Creative problem solving ability to bridge limited financial and material resources with production designs within budget and schedule. Ability to assimilate design information from two dimensions (drawings) into three-dimensional spatial relationships. Ability to evaluate staff and set performance goals and objectives. Knowledge of USA, AEA, IATSE, and SDC collective bargaining agreements is a plus. Skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) as well as various cloud-based programs. Working knowledge of CAD software a plus. Strong flexibility and ability to easily adapt to change. WORKING CONDITIONS:

Shared and open office environment. Extending viewing of computer screens. May be required to lift up to 50 lbs which can be accomplished via a team lift. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed. Some travel required, as well as offsite work. Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company is located in Washington, D.C.’s Penn Quarter neighborhood. It is air-conditioned, located in a wheelchair accessible building, and in close proximity to public transportation.

SALARY

$85,000.00 – $95,000.00 per year
