Violence Prevention Research Analyst

Job Summary This analyst will work primarily as a member of a research team that uses experimental and quasi-experimental methods to evaluate firearm, criminal justice, and social policy and their effects on violence, public safety, and community well-being. Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position Doctoral or master's degree in economics, public policy, statistics, biostatistics, sociology, criminology, epidemiology, public health, or a related quantitative social science field. Experience with hypothesis-driven data analysis, including causal inference methods and/or methods appropriate to randomized and quasi-experimental designs. Experience with scientific manuscript writing and data analysis in an academic or research setting. Experience performing and summarizing scientific literature reviews. Advanced knowledge of study designs and analytic methods for quantitative research. High-level expertise in programming, managing, and analyzing data using R, Stata, or SAS statistical software. Preferred Qualifications Experience obtaining, managing, linking, and/or analyzing large administrative or survey datasets for multidisciplinary research projects. Experience designing and conducting policy evaluations using quasi-experimental methods, such as difference-in-differences, synthetic control, regression discontinuity, or instrumental variables. Experience using GIS methods to examine spatiotemporal patterns of events under study. Evidence of significant contributions to published research, as demonstrated through authorship. Experience applying project management principles, including coordinating multi-site or community-partnered studies and managing timelines, deliverables, and stakeholder relationships. Knowledge of project management principles and practices related to research coordination and stakeholder engagement. Familiarity with one or more of the team's research areas, such as firearm and criminal justice policy, the social and structural determinants of violence, or poverty and housing. Familiarity with machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and/or large language models (LLMs), and their application to social science or policy research. Ability to independently learn new statistical and computational methods and become proficient in new software packages and tools. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently under varying levels of oversight while maintaining attention to detail and adjusting priorities as needed. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, and to convey complex information to professional and lay audiences. Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills appropriate for project coordination responsibilities. Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy. Knowledge of and ability to adhere to University and departmental policies, sponsor requirements, and confidentiality standards related to clinical, criminal, and personal information. Key Responsibilities 30% - Project Management and Coordination 30% - Data Management, Analysis, and Interpretation 20% - Study Design 20% - Dissemination and Research Support Department Overview The Centers for Violence Prevention (CVP) at UC Davis, an internationally-recognized leader in research on the public health approach to violence, is seeking an outstanding research analyst with a doctoral or master's degree in public policy, epidemiology, economics, criminology, or a related quantitative social science field, and documented research expertise to serve as a Research Data Analyst and Project Manager for a multi-disciplinary research program. CVP comprises the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program, founded more than 35 years ago, and the California Firearm Violence Research Center, the nation's first publicly funded center for research in that field. Our continuing mission is to develop and disseminate the scientific evidence on which informed violence prevention policy and practice are based. CVP is a multidisciplinary, collaborative effort with multiple independent investigators. Our research spans a wide array of topics and study designs. Our status as a reliable source for rigorous research and our location in Sacramento increase our ability to translate findings into practice and public policy.
