Surgical Technologist

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting surgeons, registered nurses, and other operating room personnel in providing safe and effective patient care during surgical procedures. This role prepares and maintains sterile surgical environments, organizes instruments and supplies, supports surgical teams during procedures, and ensures adherence to infection prevention and patient safety standards. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment while maintaining a commitment to patient care and surgical excellence. Key Responsibilities Surgical Support Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures by gathering and organizing instruments, supplies, and equipment. Establish and maintain sterile fields throughout surgical procedures. Assist surgeons during operations by anticipating instrument and equipment needs. Pass instruments, sutures, sponges, and other surgical supplies during procedures. Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are available, functioning properly, and sterile before procedures begin. Assist with patient positioning, surgical site preparation, and room setup according to established protocols. Support surgical teams during routine, emergency, and specialized procedures. Sterile Processing & Infection Control Maintain strict adherence to aseptic techniques and infection prevention standards. Monitor sterile fields and identify potential contamination issues. Perform surgical counts of instruments, needles, and sponges with circulating nurses according to policy. Ensure compliance with hospital, regulatory, and accreditation requirements related to sterile processing and surgical services. Properly handle, clean, and prepare surgical instruments for sterilization and reuse. Patient Safety & Quality Verify patient information, surgical procedures, and equipment readiness prior to surgery. Assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients and surgical staff. Support compliance with patient safety initiatives and quality standards. Recognize and report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly. Participate in quality improvement and departmental initiatives. Maintain accurate records related to surgical procedures and supplies as required. Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care. Assist with inventory management and replenishment of surgical supplies and equipment. Participate in team briefings, debriefings, and surgical time-outs. Required Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program. Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, sterile techniques, and operating room protocols. Strong understanding of infection prevention and aseptic practices. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced surgical environment. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities. Ability to remain calm and effective during complex or emergency procedures. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist in a hospital, ambulatory surgery center, or surgical services department. Experience supporting multiple surgical specialties, such as: Orthopedic Surgery General Surgery Cardiovascular Surgery Vascular Surgery Obstetrics/Gynecology Robotic-Assisted Surgery Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and surgical documentation systems. Experience with advanced surgical equipment and technologies. Certifications Required Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification, if required by state law or facility policy. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Preferred Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Education Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program required. Associate Degree in Surgical Technology preferred where applicable. Experience Previous surgical technologist experience preferred. New graduates of accredited Surgical Technology programs may be considered based on facility requirements.
