Water Operator PositionUnder the close supervision of a higher-level Operator, the employee learns the position of Water Operator through on-the-job training. Tasks and duties performed include, but are not limited to, learning the basic operations and functions of a water treatment plant, operating and checking the operation of plant equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, filters, and engines, lubricating and changing lubricants for plant equipment, reading plant gauges and meters to monitor effective plant operations, receiving training in water quality testing, safe use of treatment chemicals, testing laboratory procedures, cleaning tanks and other equipment, and preparing required reports, records, and logs. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to a background check and random drug screenings.Essential Functions: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. Employee learns how water treatment plant operates through on-the-job training from a higher Operator.Receives training in all aspects of water treatment plant operations from a higher-level Operator.Operational tasks will include learning the basic steps in water treatment, learning how to check and operate treatment equipment, training in water quality testing and laboratory procedures, training in required reporting procedures, training in the safe use and applications of water treatment chemicals, and training in equipment cleaning and maintenance.Minimum Qualifications:Possess a high school diploma or GED.Ability to obtain a Grade II Water Treatment Plant Operator certification from the state (ADEM). Must have at least eighteen (18) months of working experience at the treatment plant before applying for certification as a Grade II Operator. Credit for a maximum of nine (9) months of working experience may be allowed by ADEM following the completion of, or attendance at, ADEM-approved training programs, classes, or seminars.Possess a current and valid driver's license; must be insurable.Ability to travel to attend professional development training programs and workshops.Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (Can be acquired on the job)Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.Knowledge of City geography, road, and bridge systems.Knowledge of municipal water treatment plant operations and procedures.Knowledge of safety rules including accident causation and prevention.Communication skills to effectively communicate internally and externally, both orally and in writing.Verbal skills to effectively communicate with co-workers and supervisors.Writing skills to develop professional reports and other materials using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Reading skills to understand and interpret state and City regulations, procedures, and instructions.Math skills to perform basic calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide).Ability to use computers and office productivity software.Ability to learn the operation of water treatment plant equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, engines, and electronic and manual control equipment.Ability to accurately read meters and gauges used in the treatment process.Ability to learn the safe use of water treatment chemicals.Ability to learn how to prepare required state and federal reports.Ability to maintain professional attitude.Ability to use hand power tools safely and effectively.Ability to use a multiline telephone and two-way radio.Ability to deal with all contacts in a courteous and patient manner.Ability to handle dynamic situations in a calm and courteous manner.Ability to prioritize work projects and multi-task.Ability to organize files and work projects.Ability to drive.Physical Demands: The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, etc. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.
