Project Accountant

StevenDouglas is partnering with a well-established, highly successful general contractor to identify a skilled Senior Project Accountant . If so, this critical role offers the opportunity to oversee comprehensive project financial accounting, partnering closely with the Controller, accounting department, and operations teams. The ideal candidate brings a strategic mindset to project financials, ensures GAAP compliance, and delivers the financial insights necessary to drive executive decision-making. Key Responsibilities Project Transaction Management: Manage the accurate and timely posting of all project financial activity, including costs, billings, change orders, budget adjustments, and transfers. WIP Analysis: Monitor and present project progression data during monthly Work In Progress (WIP) meetings, delivering actionable financial insights to leadership. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Construction Project Managers to evaluate project expenses against budgets, proactively mitigating potential cost overruns and financial risks. Cash Flow & Receivables: Oversee project cash flow and aged receivables, implementing effective strategies to optimize overall project financial performance. Project Closeouts: Facilitate and coordinate seamless project closeouts in tandem with project managers, ensuring strict adherence to contract terms. Month-End Close: Lead the month-end closing process to ensure prompt, accurate reporting aligned with GAAP standards. Financial Reporting: Assist in compiling and presenting detailed financial reports, key insights, and strategic recommendations for stakeholders. Staff Mentorship: Train and mentor junior accounting staff, fostering continuous learning and elevating team capabilities. Special Initiatives: Support ad-hoc financial analysis, reporting assignments, and special projects as required. Required Skills & Qualifications Technical Systems: High proficiency with construction ERP systems; hands‑on experience with CMiC is highly advantageous. Accounting Expertise: In-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and specialized construction accounting standards. Advanced Excel Skills: High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to build pivot tables, utilize lookups, and manipulate complex data sets. Analytical Mindset: Exceptional organizational skills with a meticulous eye for detail and a proven ability to manage complex financial metrics. Communication & Discretion: Stellar verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with leadership, project teams, and external partners while strictly safeguarding sensitive financial data. Education & Experience Requirements Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A CPA designation or progress toward certification is preferred. Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of commercial construction and/or cost accounting experience, with a focus on large‑scale projects. Industry Domain Knowledge: Thorough understanding of the construction project life cycle, including costing/billing methods, WIP schedules, earned revenue, retainage, certified payroll, contract compliance, and key construction metrics. #J-18808-Ljbffr
