The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for coordinating and delivering exceptional, patient-focused respiratory care in line with departmental requirements and adhering to the standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. As an essential member of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist conducts various diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures while monitoring patients who are receiving both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct and document patient assessments, including breath sounds, airway patency, and cuff pressure. Perform diagnostic procedures to determine the necessity for and response to respiratory therapy.
• Administer respiratory care treatments, such as oxygen delivery, aerosol medication delivery, and chest physiotherapy.
• Assist in the placement of artificial airways and initiate, monitor, and maintain mechanical ventilation.
• Monitor patients for therapeutic responses and notify the provider while intervening as necessary in case of adverse reactions.
• Assist in the transportation of patients who depend on ventilators.
• Respond to emergency situations, ensuring airway integrity and adequate ventilation during resuscitation as needed.

Respiratory Therapy involves the assessment and treatment of patients experiencing both acute and chronic issues related to the cardiopulmonary system. Today's Respiratory Therapists have significant responsibilities in patient care and are integral members of the healthcare team. A thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of the cardiopulmonary system and the complex procedures necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment across all age groups is essential.

Responsibilities in This Role:

• Under the general supervision of the RT Supervisor or Team Leader, perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as ordered by a physician.
• Responsibilities include administering medical gases, aerosol therapy, obtaining and analyzing blood samples, conducting patient tests, operating and maintaining various respiratory and cardiopulmonary equipment, providing mechanical ventilation, maintaining artificial airways, assisting with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, educating patients, and monitoring equipment and patient responses to therapy.
• Additional tasks involve completing documentation for inpatient and departmental records, cleaning equipment, and adhering to safety and infection control protocols.

• An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited institution is required.
• A current Respiratory Therapist license from the State Board for Respiratory Care is mandatory.
• NBRC RRT certification is required.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification must be obtained within 30 days of starting employment.
• ACLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is preferred upon hire.
• ACLS and NRP certifications are required within six months of hire.
• One year of recent clinical experience is preferred.
