For more information on the Department of Justice and the United States Attorneys' Offices, visit Duties If selected, you will serve as an Investigator for the United States Attorney's Office - Eastern District of Michigan. The work involves independently planning and conducting complex investigations and/or financial examinations relating to civil actions and participating in investigative activities with Federal, State, and local officials. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Working with assigned attorneys to determine applicable administrative statutory and regulatory law and identifying possible violations or causes of action; Conducting extensive searches of files, records, and regulatory processes to find or obtain appropriate evidence for prosecution; Compiling documents and physical evidence, and creating charts, graphs, videotapes, and other audio-visual materials for use in motions and at trial; Independently handle cases as a lead investigator, which are characterized by obscure leads, few visible records, uncooperative witnesses, and conflicting evidence; Examining books, ledgers, payrolls, cost reports, billing transactions, events, or allegations under investigation; Preparing interim and final reports on progress of investigations for use by attorneys. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Qualifications To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must possess: GS-12 To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service as defined below. Specialized experience is defined as experience conducting complex investigations and/or financial examinations related to civil actions; knowledge of public healthcare programs, the statutory and regulatory provisions governing such programs, and/or methods to identify fraud, waste, and abuse within such programs; selecting interviewees and conducting interviews of witnesses; performing quantitative, qualitative or other analysis of relevant facts; coordinating investigatory activities with, and otherwise liaising with, other federal or state agencies; preparing investigative opinions that require use of considerable judgement and discretion; conducting case investigations independently, as a lead investigator or as a team member; or reviewing, analyzing, organizing, and summarizing voluminous and complex documents and data. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP): The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
