Role Description The Director of Public Relations is a full-time, on-site role based in Brooklyn, NY, responsible for leading the Council’s public communications and media strategy. The role includes drafting and overseeing press releases, managing media inquiries, and coordinating interviews and public statements for leadership and Council Members. The Director will develop and implement strategic communications plans for legislative initiatives, community outreach, and key Council priorities. Daily tasks involve monitoring news coverage, preparing talking points and messaging, supervising PR and communications staff, and maintaining consistent, accurate information across traditional and digital channels. The Director will work closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure timely, clear, and accessible communication with the public and media. Qualifications Strong public relations and media relations skills, with experience managing Press Releases and proactive outreach to journalists and outlets. Expertise in Communication and Strategic Communications, including message development, narrative building, and alignment with organizational goals. Demonstrated ability to lead communication initiatives in a governmental, nonprofit, or public-sector environment. Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills, with attention to detail and audience-focused messaging. Proven leadership and team management experience, including supervising staff and coordinating cross-functional projects. Ability to work on-site in Brooklyn, NY, and collaborate effectively with diverse colleagues and community stakeholders. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field; advanced degree or equivalent experience is beneficial.
