Position Summary
The Director of Audiology provides overarching strategic, clinical, academic, and operational leadership for the Division of Audiology within the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at MUSC. This role is responsible for advancing a high-performing, patient-centered, and academically driven audiology enterprise across all subspecialty areas.
The Director leads a section-based leadership model and partners closely with Section Chiefs (Pediatric Audiology, Hearing Aids, Vestibular Audiology, and Cochlear Implants), the Assistant Director of Audiology/Operations, and the department business office to ensure alignment of clinical operations, academic missions, and financial performance.
The Director is allocated 50% protected administrative time, with the remaining effort dedicated to clinical care, teaching, and/or research.
Reports to : Department Chair (direct); Division Chiefs of Neurotology and Pediatric ENT (indirect)
Direct Reports : Section Chiefs (Pediatric Audiology, Hearing Aids, Vestibular Audiology, and Cochlear Implants); Assistant Director of Audiology/Operations ; Audiology Fiscal/Revenue Analyst
Collaborates with: Department Business Office; Revenue Cycle
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Define and execute a comprehensive strategic plan for the Audiology Division aligned with departmental and institutional priorities.
- Lead development and growth of subspecialty programs, including pediatric audiology, hearing aids, vestibular services, and cochlear implants.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, expansion, and improved access across MUSC’s clinical footprint.
- Oversee long-term planning for space, equipment, and programmatic growth.

Clinical & Operational Oversight
- Provide executive oversight of all audiology clinical services, ensuring:
- High-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care
- Optimal access, throughput, and patient experience
- Standardization of clinical protocols across sections
- Interdisciplinary collaboration and operational planning with Otology, Pediatric ENT, etc.
• Partner with the Assistant Director of Audiology/Operations on:
- Schedule/template optimization
- Clinic utilization and access
• Partner with Section Chiefs on:
- Staffing models and workforce planning
- Section-specific operational needs
- Ensure compliance with all institutional, state, federal, and accreditation requirements.
Financial Performance & Revenue Cycle Management
- Monitor financial performance of the Audiology Division, including:
- Contributing to budget development and management in conjunction with department business office
- Revenue growth and expense control to optimize divisional margin
- Partner with revenue cycle, billing, and coding teams to:
- Improve charge capture and documentation accuracy
- Reduce denials and optimize reimbursement
- Ensure compliance with payer requirements
- Lead development of business plans for new programs, technologies, and service expansions.
Leadership of Section Chiefs
- Directly supervise and support Section Chiefs, including:
- Pediatric Audiology
- Hearing Aids
- Vestibular Audiology
- Cochlear Implants
- Establish clear expectations, goals, and performance metrics.
- Conduct annual performance reviews for Section Chiefs.
- Ensure alignment across sections to support integrated, seamless patient care.
- Partner with Section Chiefs on recruitment, retention, and program development.

Faculty & Workforce Development
- Oversee division-wide recruitment and retention strategy in collaboration with Section Chiefs and the business office.
- Lead faculty contracting and compensation planning in partnership with the Department Chair.
- Ensure a high-performing, engaged workforce aligned with divisional goals.
- Support leadership development of Section Chiefs and emerging leaders.

Academic & Educational Leadership
- Ensure excellence in audiology education across all levels, including students, externs, residents, and fellows.
- Maintain accreditation standards (AAA, ASHA, etc.)
- Enhance training programs and learner experience
- Promote interdisciplinary education with otolaryngology and other departments.
Research & Innovation
- Foster and promote a culture of research, scholarship, and innovation within the division.
- Support faculty engagement in clinical, translational, and collaborative research.
- Streamline research infrastructure within the division. Ensure centralized organization of studies and projects that require Audiology deployment. Coordinate with business office and clinical research team on budgeting for Audiology on studies.
- Encourage development of novel care models, technologies, and clinical pathways.
- Advance MUSC’s national reputation in audiology through publications, presentations, and grant activity.
Administrative & Institutional Leadership
- Represent Audiology at departmental, institutional, and external meetings.
- Contribute to departmental strategic planning, capital planning, and facility design.
- Lead planning efforts related to space, equipment, and future growth initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Doctor of Audiology (AuD) or PhD in Audiology or related field
- Eligibility for South Carolina licensure
- Demonstrated leadership experience in audiology or related healthcare setting
- Experience managing clinical operations, programs, or service lines
Preferred
- Academic medical center experience
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams
- Track record of program development and growth
- Involvement in teaching, research, or scholarly activity
