Description

The Green Barn at Gilroy Gardens is the educational hub in which you will be interacting with guests. You will be responsible for facilitating our Nature Exchange Program, the merchandising of educational products, and leading scheduled scientific activities. Our Nature Exchange Program allows guests to bring in rocks, minerals, shells, etc. from their environment and area to discover, learn, and trade different aspects of the physical sciences.

Essential Job Functions:

• Greet and interact with guests and docents cordially. Assist guests with the Nature Exchange program and determining any additional desired merchandise
• Provide information in person and via telephone regarding products and services of Green Barn and general information within Gilroy Gardens.
• Stock and maintain inventory of retail items and Nature Exchange rocks, minerals, fossils, shells, and insects.
• Research and explore items brought in by guests for the Nature Exchange. Attempt to identify the specimen through books, nature guides, existing materials, and the internet if needed.
• Maintain and update the Nature Exchange database to accurately reflect points acquired and spent within the Green Barn Nature Exchange.
• Conduct science and learning based activities with groups, as scheduled.
• Receive and retrieve boxed stock to and from stockroom areas for retail display and sales promotion.
• Monitor inventory and make sure shelves are stocked throughout the day.
• Answer questions that guests may have regarding product and programs.
• Use the cash register to correctly price and tax merchandise selected by guests.
• Receive payments of cash, credit card, checks, or traveler checks and make correct change.
• Wrap or bag merchandise for guests after their purchase.
• Balance and reconcile cash register when applicable.
• Perform all job duties in a safe, responsible manner.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications:

• Must have reliable transportation to get to work
• Must be at least 14 years of age
• Must have full availability including weekends and holidays
• Must have good communication skills
• Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide 10's and 100's
• Ability to perform these operations using units of U.S. currency and weight measurement
• Must be able to get to "hard to reach" areas, stooping, bending and crawling may be required
• Ability to carry, push, pull, lift, grip, grasp and hold objects weighing at least 50 pounds
• Ability to stand, walk, bend and reach above shoulders for an extended period of time
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions
• Ability to utilize strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to perform basic math functions
• Ability to problem solve with minimal supervision
• Ability to organize and prioritize to meet deadlines
