Electrician (Skilled Trade Specialist II)

Overview Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities across the State of Maryland, including bridges, tunnels, and turnpikes. Nature of Work The main purpose of this position is to perform journey-level electrical work in accordance with all applicable regulations and industry practices. Install, repair, and maintain electrical equipment such as ballasts, cable, conduit boxes, conduit tubing, control systems, coils, electronic signage, fans, fluorescent and incandescent units, fuses, generators, high‑mast light poles, outlets, panels, relays, switches, navigational lights, transformers, wiring, roadway lighting systems, and emergency standby systems. Provide additional support for carpentry, locksmithing, masonry, painting, welding, and HVAC tasks as needed. Work outdoors under all weather conditions or indoors in MDOT buildings, often on high poles, in cramped quarters, or underground. Move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and perform work on elevated or restricted locations. Work Schedule Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and are subject to emergency call‑back procedures 24 hours a day. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalency certificate. Experience: Three years of skilled trade work as an electrician. Substitutions: One year of vocational technical school certification in a skilled trade may substitute one year of experience; U.S. Armed Forces military service as a non‑commissioned officer in utilities repair or construction/engineering specialties may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis. Motor vehicle requirements: Must possess a valid Maryland driver’s license; during probation may need a Class A or B commercial driver’s license. Special Requirements Must be willing and available to work duties days or nights as required for continuous facility operation and be subject to call‑in. Maintain reliable communication for emergency call‑back procedures. May be exposed to hazardous materials; periodic medical testing and hazardous materials training may be required. Must demonstrate ability to work on high structures and in cramped quarters. Essential Employee status requires agreement to all related policies and procedures.
