Staff Mechanical Engineer R&D – Johnson & Johnson Santa Clara, CA. The Robotics and Digital Solutions (RAD) group, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is recruiting for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our Strategic Robotics R&D Team, based in Santa Clara, CA. Remote work may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis, subject to company approval. This is a part‑time position. Key Responsibilities Design and develop robotic capital hardware for use in surgical room environments. Iterate quickly on proof‑of‑concept prototypes, implement long‑term commercial design solutions, and engage with vendors. Own design & integration of key robot arm components, and work semi‑autonomously on robotic hardware development projects. Influence and drive architectural decisions, incorporating applicable learnings from past designs. Occasional travel to J&J or vendor sites may be required. Required Experience and Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering degree with 8+ years of experience developing mechanical hardware. 5+ years of experience designing surgical robotics hardware. Deep knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals (e.g., mechanisms, materials, FEA, GD&T). Proven experience integrating electromechanical components (including PCBAs, motors, sensors, cable harnesses, and connectors) into surgical robot applications. Experience using SolidWorks (or equivalent CAD package), including the ability to create models, assemblies, and detailed drawings, following best design practices and standards. Strong communication skills and ability to work remotely as part of a hybrid team. Preferred Experience and Skills Existing familiarity with hardware architecture of Ottava (or similar). Pay: The anticipated base hourly range for this part‑time position is $55.29 to $95.10. Pay Transparency (San Francisco Bay Area) – $67.79 to $109.47.
