Facilities Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lead Facilities Technician serves as the senior technical expert and working lead for the Community Food Bank's (CFB) Facilities Department. This position performs advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of commercial building systems while providing day-to-day technical guidance and work coordination to Facilities Technicians. The Lead Facilities Technician supports the planning and prioritization of maintenance activities, coordinates technical work with vendors and contractors, assists with inspections and regulatory compliance, and helps ensure facilities remain safe, reliable, and operational. Working closely with the Associate Director of Facilities Operations, this position promotes quality workmanship, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement while serving as the department's primary technical resource. This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serves as the technical lead for HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building systems.
• Coordinates daily maintenance activities and assists with assigning work based on operational priorities.
• Performs advanced troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of complex building systems.
• Leads resolution of recurring maintenance issues and recommends long-term corrective actions.
• Assists with planning, scheduling, and completing preventive maintenance activities.
• Reviews completed maintenance work to ensure quality, safety, and compliance.
• Provides technical guidance, coaching, and hands-on training to Facilities Technicians.
• Assists with onboarding and cross-training new Facilities staff.
• Coordinates field activities with contractors, vendors, inspectors, and service providers.
• Assists with inspection readiness for OSHA, AIB, USDA, fire/life safety, backflow, elevators, and regulatory inspections.
• Monitors refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, and utility systems to maintain food safety standards.
• Responds to emergency facility issues and serves as the primary technical resource during after-hours emergencies.
• Identifies equipment replacement needs and provides recommendations for capital improvements.
• Assists the Associate Director with evaluating maintenance priorities and operational risks.
• Maintains accurate maintenance records, preventive maintenance documentation, inspection records, and work order updates.
• Promotes safe work practices and ensures compliance with OSHA, SDS, AIB, Feeding America, USDA, and local regulations.
• Serves as acting technical lead during the Associate Director's absence.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if applicable and must be directly related to the functions and body of knowledge required to successfully perform the job.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible commercial facilities maintenance experience.
• Three (3) years performing advanced HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical repairs.
• Experience coordinating maintenance projects or leading technical work.
• Experience using Microsoft Office 365 and computerized work order systems.
• Arizona Driver License with acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

• EPA Refrigerant Certification.
• Trade certification in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or building maintenance.
• Experience working in warehouse, manufacturing, healthcare, food distribution, or nonprofit facilities.
• Experience supporting AIB audits.
• Bilingual English/Spanish.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Heavy Work - which involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Frequently stands, walks, climbs ladders and stairs, kneels, crouches, crawls, stoops, bends, and works in confined spaces.
• Frequently reaches overhead and below shoulder level while performing maintenance and repair activities.
• Uses hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
• Works indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and environmental conditions.
• May be exposed to dust, noise, chemicals, moving mechanical equipment, electrical systems, and other hazards associated with commercial facilities maintenance.
• Must be available to respond to emergency and after-hours maintenance needs as assigned.
