The position requires independent judgment, the ability to operate with limited supervision and guidance, and frequent contact with clients and others internal and external to Duke Energy Corporation and its affiliates (collectively, the “Company”) under the general direction of a Deputy General Counsel.This position will be based in Charlotte, NC. ResponsibilitiesProvide legal support for intellectual property matters, including managing trademark and patent portfolios; advising on intellectual property development, deployment and licensing; company policies and procedures; and IP disputesProvide legal support on technology transactions and related agreements, including agreements involving pilot projects, AI tools, software, SaaS, data, cloud platforms, emerging technology, and related servicesProvide legal support for general commercial matters, including contracts with suppliers, vendors and customersCollaborate with stakeholders including supply chain, privacy, security, AI, IT and cybersecurity to align legal strategy, address key issues, and advise on evolving business needsNegotiate contracts within attorney’s area of expertise and assist with developing, maintaining and refining contract templates, clause libraries, playbooks, fallback positions, and related internal processesManage and resolve routine and non-routine legal matters requiring a broad and thorough understanding of the Company and its business, including various intellectual property, information technology, enterprise services and customer program projects and transactionsClearly and concisely communicate legal advice to Company managementResearch and draft legal memoranda, policies, corporate governance materials, and other legal documentsConsult with Deputy General Counsel on legal issues of significant value, or which may have economic, political or media implications for the CompanyWork with and manage outside counsel to maximize efficiencyComply with processes to protect the company from unnecessary risks and liabilities, including all reporting requirementsRemain current on legal trends, laws and regulations and proactively communicate information to other attorneys in the Legal DepartmentMaintain job-related technical knowledge and skills, and in-depth knowledge of issues relating to the utility industryKey skills and experienceExperience advising on intellectual property matters, including licensing, registration and developmentExperience negotiating technology contracts, including for pilot projects, AI tools, software, SaaS, data, cloud platforms, emerging technology, and related servicesSound judgment and decision-makingBasic/Required Qualifications - CounselBachelor's DegreeDoctor of Jurisprudence degree (JD) from an accredited law schoolMinimum of two (2) years of experience practicing lawLicensed to practice law in the US and eligible for reciprocityBasic/Required Qualifications - Senior CounselBachelor's DegreeDoctor of Jurisprudence degree (JD) from an accredited law schoolMinimum of three (3)] years of experience practicing lawLicensed to practice law in the US and eligible for reciprocityDesired QualificationsExperience reviewing, negotiating, and advising on commercial contracts, including related to enterprise and administrative servicesExperience analyzing complex matters and reducing them to manageable products and communicationsExperience negotiating IP licensesKnowledge of, or experience with, the patent process and/or trademark registration and maintenanceStrong verbal communication skillsAbility to take initiative and work independentlyAbility to manage multiple complex matters simultaneouslyAbility to work as a part of a team of other lawyers and business stakeholdersExperience in energy or related industriesExperience managing and resolving disputesLicensed to practice in North Carolina or another state in which the Company operatesWorking Conditions Hybrid with three days/week in officeNo travel will be required#LI-PG1#LI-HybridTravel RequirementsNot requiredRelocation Assistance Provided (as applicable)NoRepresented/Union PositionNoVisa Sponsored PositionNo. This is not a Visa Sponsored Position.
