Job Title: General Production Worker – Crate Builder

Job Description

This role focuses on building custom crates and boxes used to protect products during shipment. You will read and interpret prints and drawings, cut materials to specified dimensions, assemble crates using hand and power tools, and prepare finished packages for shipment in coordination with the materials team. The position offers structured shifts, opportunities to learn a trade, and cross-training in a clean, laid-back manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Review and interpret prints and drawings to understand crate specifications and dimensions.
• Measure and cut wood and other materials to precise lengths using hand tools and power tools, including skill saws.
• Assemble crates and boxes according to drawings, using impact tools and other equipment to securely fasten components.
• Inspect completed crates for accuracy, structural integrity, and readiness for shipment.
• Prepare finished packages for shipping, including labeling, staging, and organizing materials for outbound logistics.
• Collaborate with the materials team to stage, load, and send out completed crates and packages.
• Follow established production processes and manufacturing best practices in a general labor and assembly environment.
• Use tape measures and other measuring devices to ensure accurate cuts and assembly.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to safety guidelines and proper use of tools and equipment.
• Participate in cross-training opportunities across production and related areas to expand skills and support team needs.
• Work assigned shifts and optional Friday hours as needed to meet production and shipping schedules.

Essential Skills

• Experience using hand tools and power tools, including skill saws for cutting wood and impact tools for crate assembly.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, prints, and drawings to build crates to specification.
• Comfort working in a warehouse, manufacturing, and general production environment.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with general labor and assembly tasks.
• Proficiency using a tape measure and other basic measuring tools for accurate cutting and assembly.
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and standing for extended periods in a production setting.
• Steel toe boots, with readiness to work in required safety footwear.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Preferred experience with forklift (hilo) operation and material handling.
• in manufacturing, general labor, production, or assembly work.
• Interest in learning and developing a long-term trade within a manufacturing environment.
• Willingness to cross-train in related departments and processes.
• Ability to work 1st shift (7:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday–Thursday) and potentially transition to 2nd shift (4:30 PM – 3:00 AM, Monday–Thursday) after training.
• Openness to optional Friday work based on team and production needs.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean, modern manufacturing facility that produces pathology, histology, necropsy, and morgue equipment. The operation spans multiple departments, including Engineering, Machining, Welding, Metal Finishing, and Shipping/Receiving, and manages work-in-process from raw materials to finished products in one location. You will work primarily in a general production and assembly environment using hand tools, power tools, tape measures, and material handling equipment. Shifts are structured as 1st shift (7:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday–Thursday) with training on 1st shift for approximately three months, followed by a potential move to 2nd shift (4:30 PM – 3:00 AM, Monday–Thursday). Friday work is optional and can be arranged based on team preferences and production needs. The culture is relaxed and family-oriented, with a focus on safety and cleanliness. The dress code is standard working attire appropriate for manufacturing, with steel toe boots required; welding helmets and welding gloves are used in welding areas as needed

This is a Contract position based out of Madison Heights, MI.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
