Division Chief of Anesthesiology Preoperative Clinics

The Department of Anesthesiology at the Emory University School of Medicine is seeking a board eligible/board certified anesthesiologist to join our Emory University team and serve as the Division Chief of our Anesthesiology Preoperative Clinics.

Staffed exclusively by Emory University School of Medicine faculty, Emory University Hospital is a quaternary-care academic medical center which performs 25,000 anesthetic cases per year and is one of the nation's leading hospitals in solid organ transplants, cancer, neurosurgery, and more.

As a member of the faculty, physicians actively engage in the tripartite mission delivering high-quality clinical care, participating in innovative research, and educating medical students, future anesthesiologists and anesthetists.

Emory University's anesthesiology program includes 48 residents, 20 fellows in ACGME programs such as cardiac, critical care, OB and pain, and non-ACGME programs in neuro anesthesia and liver transplant.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities, included but not limited to: The Division Chief, APCs will:

• Aid and advise the Chair and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in all aspects of developing and maintaining the clinical operations of the Department's APCs,
• Participate in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments in preoperative medicine,
• Continuously evaluate and update screening protocols and clinical practice within the APCs to reflect current best practices as derived from available guidelines, literature, and collaboration with colleagues
• Deploy best practices across the Department's APCs to ensure consistency in practice and process
• Lead efforts to streamline patient visits with the mutual goals of enhancing patient satisfaction and improving operational efficiency
• Establish productivity metrics for APC clinicians; revise as indicated
• Study and revise workflow of clinicians, nurses, administrative staff to ensure optimal patient experience in least amount of time
• Evaluate and implement electronic pre-screening tools to facilitate the mapping of patient responses into EEMR prior to a patient encounter to reduce/eliminate transcription of basic information
• Engage with Surgeons, their office staff, the OR scheduling office, and other relevant stakeholders to promote a seamless process for arranging APC visits and resolving operational issues
• Coordinate in-services as necessary to maintain engagement of stakeholders
• Participate in budget discussions related to staffing and to setting the appropriate number of appointments per provider per shift
• Ensure sufficient clinician staffing (Faculty, APP, Trainee) to support the templated number of daily patient visits,
• Manage the section's financial performance,
• Serve as direct clinical supervisor of Section's Chief APP
• Evaluate performance as necessary for periodic review
• Identify goals/objectives for Chief APP
• Collaborate to derive appropriate metrics for APP incentive plan
• Serve as direct clinical supervisor of each hospital's physician APC site lead for the portion of their effort dedicated to APC practice
• Hold regular meetings with APC faculty and APPs to educate about updates in practice/process and to identify challenges
• Serve as APC Clinicians' representative to relevant facility teams
• Liaise with EVS/materials management re: issues of cleanliness, stocking, equipment delivery, etc.
• Educate all members of the APC team about Joint Commission Guidelines and ensure appropriate resources/practices to maintain compliance
• Participate in capital budget planning/submission to Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, Nursing Unit Director in charge of site's APC nursing team
• Represent Section on Committees related to APC Clinical Operations
• Committees dealing with updates/changes to physical plant/facilities
• Committees dealing with TJC inspection readiness
• Committees dealing with APC efficiency
• Relevant ad hoc committees/task forces/etc. as requested by Chair, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs
• Work with the Administrator and, when asked, the Office of Compliance to assure compliance,
• Contribute to the formulation of policy and strategy of the Department as requested by the Chair, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs,
• Prepares and distributes accurate and timely financial projections, assessments, analyses, reports, plans, and solutions to the Chair, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, and members of the Department's administrative team as requested.

*Must be an active applicant for a faculty appointment within the department to be considered for this Division Chief of Anesthesiology Preoperative Clinics (APCs) role.

Time Allocation: The Division Chief will receive 20% nonclinical time to fulfill the requirements of the post at the discretion of the Chair. The Division Chief will spend at least one day per week, averaged over each month, at both the EUH APC and the EUHM APC.

Report: The Division Chief reports to the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, and members of the Department's administrative team as requested.

Candidate Qualifications:

• ? 7 years of experience working in a preoperative clinic and ? 3 years of leadership in preoperative clinics/preoperative medicine.
• M.D., D.O., or foreign equivalent.
• Eligible to apply for a medical license in the state of Georgia.
• American Board of Anesthesiology board certified/eligible.
• The VC for Professional Development will have achieved the rank of Associate Professor or higher when they assume the role.
• Demonstrated experience supporting faculty development and promotion processes, collaborating with departmental leadership on recruitment and professional growth initiatives, and participating in performance evaluation and committee activities.
• Criteria for faculty appointment include excellence across clinical care, clinical teaching, and scholarly activity.
• Experience with OB anesthesia a plus
