Job Description
The Chief is responsible for the overall direction of the center. The Chief has primary responsibility for the vision of the center, the clinical approach and focus of care, and the research and teaching agenda. The Chief is also responsible for driving quality, patient safety, and resolving operational issues for the center.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (Children's) and Emory University School of Medicine (Emory) are seeking a visionary and collaborative physician leader with a strong clinical and academic foundation to serve as Chief of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Division Chief, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMTCT at Emory University School of Medicine. The Chief will lead a dynamic team of faculty dedicated to excellent and innovative clinical care, education, research, and advocacy for underserved communities.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to multi-dimensional growth at Children's and Emory related to hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant, cellular therapy and other pediatric cancer and blood disorders reflecting all three of our missions of excellent clinical care, education, and discovery.
Principal duties and responsibilities
- Become established as a trusted, effective, and highly collaborative leader among division faculty and staff, donors, and administrative leaders at Children's and Emory.
- Further develop an existing divisional leadership team and tap into the expertise and enthusiasm of current faculty with respect to clinical services, education, research, and advocacy.
- Refine the Division's vision and strategic priorities for pediatric hematology, oncology and blood and marrow transplantation and cellular therapy, aligning stakeholders across Children's, Emory, Morehouse and Grady and balancing missions of patient care, research, and teaching.
- Integrate and support a large multidisciplinary team of physicians, psychologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other allied health professionals
- Provide strategic oversight for the Marcus Center for Cellular Therapy (MCCT) and GMP labs in coordination with the MCCT and GMP lab leadership.
- Drive clinical excellence across the center's numerous comprehensive nationally recognized programs, and support expansion of system strategic initiatives such as immunohematology, immune dysregulation, survivorship and fertility preservation
- Develop and lead a unified inpatient and outpatient coverage model that optimizes physician, APP and multidisciplinary team staffing across all Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center sites, ensuring seamless transitions of care, high-quality and consistent clinical practice, and sufficient capacity to meet patient access, acuity, and therapy needs across the Children's system.
- Partner with clinical directors and hospital administrators to evaluate clinical operation models, develop and assess new models of care, and provide recommendations to improve system performance, quality, and efficiency as well as family experiences.
- Support an inclusive environment within the division to ensure the continued effective recruitment of outstanding residents, fellows, and attending physicians and psychologists.
- Work closely with educational leadership for the medical student clerkship, pediatric residency, and fellowship to ensure instruction in pediatric hematology/oncology is current and reflects LCME/ACGME requirements.
- Ensure faculty development and mentorship, leveraging the Division's expertise to align professional growth opportunities with the needs of children and the community and strategic priorities and initiatives within Children's and Emory.
- Nurture the culture of teaching and learning at Children's and Emory, grounded in a model that emphasizes health equity and the care of "the whole child" within the context of their family and community.
- Support training in pediatric nonmalignant hematology through the T32 Hematology Training Program and broaden advanced training opportunities through innovative fourth-year fellowships in subspecialty areas including neuro-oncology, BMTCT, survivorship and sickle cell disease.
- Work with the Vice Chair of Research/Chief Research Officer to support scholarly activity and innovation in pediatric hematology/oncology/BMTCT, including administrative support and mentorship for research.
- Support scholarship within the division and through community partnerships and research synergies, including in areas such as basic and translational science, developmental therapeutics, clinical trials research, cellular and gene therapy, survivorship, medical education, quality improvement, health equity, and care of underserved populations; foster interdisciplinary collaborations with other divisions, departments, and medical schools.
- Enhance the division's contribution to population health and outcomes-focused research, health systems science, and implementation science, including efforts to improve pediatric hematology/oncology and BMTCT outcomes at the patient, system, and state level.
- Partner strategically with the Children's Foundation to deepen and sustain major donor relationships, including strengthened center?level partnerships with Aflac Inc. and the Amos Family, to advance shared philanthropic and mission?driven priorities.
- Cultivate and steward existing donors while proactively developing new philanthropic relationships that expand and diversify funding support for clinical care, research, and training initiatives.
- Maintain a visible and active presence across the state of Georgia through strong community and advocacy partnerships, including the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, Hemophilia of Georgia, the Georgia Sickle Cell Foundation, and other key organizations, to advance education, awareness, and equitable access to care.
Candidate Education and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD/DO) from an accredited school of medicine.
- Board Certification in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and eligible for licensure in Georgia.
- Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at Emory University School of Medicine.
